ESL Lead Teacher (Part-time)
Location: Thomasville Middle School, Thomasville, North Carolina
Position Overview
Reporting to the school principal and ESL director, the ESL Lead Teacher will provide instructional leadership, direction, and support within the ESL (English as a Second Language) program. This role combines direct student instruction with coaching, mentorship, and program coordination to enhance services for Multilingual Learners (MLs).
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Support
- Identify students with limited English proficiency through testing, observational data, registration info, and staff referrals, following district and state regulations.
- Assess students’ academic and language needs using standardized tests and diagnostic tools.
- Develop and implement individualized ML instructional plans, selecting appropriate curriculum and materials to meet each student’s needs.
- Provide both small-group and individualized instruction to facilitate English proficiency and integration into the school’s broader academic program.
- Monitor and document students’ academic progress; prepare individualized progress reports.
- Establish a supportive, inclusive environment that nurtures self-esteem, ethnic pride, and social skills.
Program Leadership & Mentorship
- Coach and mentor other ESL and general education teachers in effective strategies for supporting MLs, including co-teaching, sheltered instruction, and differentiated content delivery.
- Observe classroom practices, offer feedback, and model effective ESL instructional techniques.
- Lead or assist in program planning, including curriculum coordination, instructional resource selection, and compliance with ESL regulations.
- Oversee staff development initiatives: plan and deliver training, workshops, or professional learning opportunities focused on ML instruction.
Administrative & Collaborative Duties
- Coordinate ESL assessments (e.g., WIDA Screener, ACCESS) and support faculty with accommodations and compliance.
- Analyze program data and assessment outcomes to monitor effectiveness and inform instructional decisions.
- Participate in relevant committees, such as School Improvement Teams and MTSS
Qualifications & Skills
- Valid North Carolina teaching license with ESL endorsement (or eligibility for endorsement).
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESOL, or related field; Master’s preferred.
- Strong experience in ESL instruction and proven leadership or mentorship in teaching (preferred).
- Deep knowledge of ML instructional strategies, language acquisition theory, and state/federal ESL policy.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and team collaboration skills.
- Ability to analyze data, develop instructional plans, and provide constructive coaching.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
