Position Overview
Waltham Public Schools is seeking a passionate, energetic, and student-centered Elementary Music Teacher to join our Fine and Performing Arts Department and elementary school teaching teams. The ideal candidate will inspire students through engaging and developmentally appropriate general music instruction that fosters musical growth, creativity, collaboration, and confidence.
The Elementary Music Teacher will provide foundational music instruction and meaningful musical experiences for students across the elementary grades. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to inclusive, standards-based music instruction and the ability to create welcoming learning environments that support students with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and levels of musical experience.
A valid Massachusetts teaching license in Music is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging, standards-based music lessons appropriate for elementary-aged students.
- Teach foundational music concepts including rhythm, melody, harmony, movement, singing, listening, improvisation, composition, and performance skills.
- Foster creativity, collaboration, confidence, self-expression, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that encourages student participation, growth, and musical exploration.
- Differentiate instruction to support students with varied learning needs, backgrounds, abilities, and levels of musical experience.
- Introduce students to a wide range of musical genres, composers, cultures, and traditions through singing, movement, listening, performance, and creative activities.
- Incorporate developmentally appropriate movement, games, instruments, and music technology into instruction.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, music department colleagues, administrators, and families to support student success and program growth.
- Assess student progress through performances, observations, classroom participation, projects, and student reflection.
- Organize and prepare students for concerts, performances, school events, and community music experiences.
- Maintain and manage classroom instruments, music library materials, equipment, and learning spaces to ensure safe and organized learning environments.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and administrators regarding student growth and program expectations.
- Participate actively in school initiatives, professional learning opportunities, department collaboration, and district meetings.
- Stay current with best practices in music education and incorporate technology and contemporary instructional practices into music instruction when appropriate.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
Certification
Valid Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Music.
Experience
- Prior experience teaching elementary general music preferred.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and inclusive classroom practices preferred.
- Experience directing elementary performances, ensembles, or musical activities is preferred.
Skills
- Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate music instruction for elementary students.
- Strong vocal and general music pedagogy skills, including experience with singing, movement, and classroom instruments.
- Ability to create engaging, culturally responsive, and student-centered music learning experiences.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Commitment to fostering equity, inclusion, creativity, and access within music education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience integrating technology into music instruction.
- Experience supporting multilingual learners and students with diverse learning needs.
- Experience organizing concerts, performances, and community music events.
- Experience collaborating across grade levels and interdisciplinary teams.
- Active involvement as a performer, conductor, or practicing musician.
