26-27 Band Director, Middle School

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Oversee all bands, and band resources at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Work closely with fellow band instructors to create a positive and productive band environment district-wide in which all involved strive for consistent excellence. Collaborate with other district instructors for joint performances/events.  Communicate clearly with all parents and students. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in adjudicated performances for large ensembles, small ensembles, and as soloists. Ensure compliance with all state, MSHSAA, and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state goals and recognition.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Plan, teach, and direct all Thomas Jefferson Middle School bands, which include 6th grade beginning band, 7th grade band, 8th grade band, Jazz band, Honor band
• Oversee all Thomas Jefferson middle school band resources including purchasing, cleaning, and repairing and overall instrument care
• Collaborate with fellow band staff to ensure superior musical instruction for all high school ensembles, which include Marching band, Concert band and Pep band.
• Collaborate with director from Lewis and Clark middle school for planning multiple joint performances, which include Band Barbecue, Spaghetti and Jazz, Bands Spectacular and Middle School Music Festival
• Participate in collaborative efforts with staff members at Thomas Jefferson Middle School to improve instructional practices and overall student achievement
• Attend all extra-duty rehearsals:  These are Summer band camps, mini camps, Thursday night rehearsals and extra rehearsals as assigned.
• Attend all extracurricular events in which the band program is performing:  Concerts, sporting events, pep rallies, parades, and MSHSAA activities and marching competitions.
• Attend all CDMMEA events and meetings
• Collaborate with and support band booster club activities.
• Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
• Present subject matter according to guidelines established by board policies and administrative regulations
• Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
• Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, principals and teachers.
• Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members.
• Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation of assistant band directors.
• Perform other duties as the superintendent may assign.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:   

• Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
• Attend meetings and performs duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
• Serve on committees as assigned.
• Remain current on instructional practices in education.  (e.g. instructional technology)
