Position Summary
Third Wave Bioactives is seeking an experienced microbiologist for fermentation research to join our dynamic and agile R&D team. The position will focus on research and development of ideal growth requirements for various bacteria used in natural preservation to express their bioactive metabolites. The ideal candidate will have research experience with microbial growth, gene expression, working knowledge of fermentation equipment, and strong communication skills. A passion for research and innovation, as well as critical thinking skills, are a must for this position.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare media, buffers, and other reagents as needed.
- Collect, identify, and curate microorganisms from a variety of environments.
- Isolate DNA and apply gene targeted PCR to identify metabolites of interest.
- Research media requirements for expression of microbial bioactives.
- Develop and optimize growth conditions utilizing shake flask and lab-scale fermentation equipment.
- Write and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Keep accurate, legible, and comprehensive records in a laboratory notebook.
- Analyze data, record results, and prepare cohesive presentations for internal discussions and external meetings.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and share in all duties to keep a clean workspace.
- Keep up to date on scientific literature.
- Work closely with R&D team and collaborate with all company colleagues.
- Comply with company policies.
Education/Experience:
M.S. in microbiology, industrial microbiology, or related field with 4 years of laboratory research experience or B.S. with 6 years of laboratory research experience.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proven hands-on microbiology skills (i.e., aseptic technique, media preparation, serial dilutions, gDNA isolation, PCR, proper handling of BSL1 and BSL2 microorganisms).
- Research experience in microbial fermentation and bacterial growth requirements.
- Working knowledge of bioreactor fermentation equipment with industrial fermentation experience preferred and familiarity with spray drying a plus.
- Knowledgeable in food safety and quality for commercially prepared food and beverages.
- Ability to reproduce published methods and generate protocols for laboratory research.
- Critical thinking, resourcefulness, and a passion for research and innovation.
- Project management skills including designing research experiments, planning, and executing protocols.
- Must have strong data interpretation and project reporting skills including written and verbal communication to support internal and external relationships.
- Excellent attention to detail and capable of performing dependable, accurate work.
- Ability to maintain laboratory equipment and update laboratory procedures.
- Ensure all laboratory activities adhere to safety regulations, proactively prevent accidents, and demonstrate commitment to safety.
- Extremely versatile and dedicated to efficient productivity.
- Functional computer software skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
This is an on-site laboratory position which will require standing for long periods of time.
Must be located within 30 miles of the Greater Milwaukee area or willing to self-relocate.
