Position Summary

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Consultant provides environmental health, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety support to clients across various industries. This position requires an active California Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) registration.

The consultant will conduct inspections, environmental health assessments, field sampling, safety evaluations, and regulatory compliance reviews. The position also supports the development of technical reports, environmental health programs, training materials, and corrective-action recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct environmental health and safety inspections, assessments, and compliance audits at client facilities.
• Perform environmental health inspections involving retail food facilities, public pools, housing, water quality, medical waste, body art, or other regulated programs, as applicable to the engagement.
• Review facility operations and documentation for compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental health requirements.
• Assist with food safety evaluations, plan reviews, HACCP programs, and related regulatory compliance activities.
• Conduct indoor air quality assessments, noise monitoring, exposure sampling, and other environmental or occupational health evaluations.
• Perform workplace safety audits, inspections, job hazard analyses, and hazard assessments.
• Collect, organize, analyze, and interpret environmental health and safety data.
• Prepare clear and accurate inspection reports, technical reports, compliance summaries, corrective-action plans, and client recommendations.
• Research and interpret applicable regulations and standards, including requirements established by the EPA, OSHA, Cal/OSHA, the California Health and Safety Code, and local enforcement agencies.
• Develop and assist with the implementation of EHS policies, procedures, management systems, and employee training materials.
• Collaborate with senior consultants and client representatives to identify environmental health and safety risks and recommend appropriate corrective measures.
• Maintain sampling equipment, calibration records, field documentation, and data-quality assurance records.
• Communicate inspection findings and regulatory requirements clearly and professionally to clients and other stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with company and client safety procedures during all fieldwork.
• Travel to client locations and provide on-site support as required.

Required Qualifications

Registration:

• Must possess and maintain a current and active California Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) registration.
• Applicants who do not currently hold an active California REHS registration will not be considered.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, or a related field that satisfies California REHS educational requirements.

Experience:

• At least two years of professional experience in environmental health, occupational safety, regulatory compliance, or EHS consulting.
• Experience conducting environmental health inspections, compliance assessments, field investigations, or related regulatory work.
• Experience working for a local environmental health agency, educational institution, healthcare organization, consulting firm, or other regulated environment is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

• Working knowledge of California environmental health laws, regulations, inspection standards, and enforcement practices.
• Understanding of federal, state, and local environmental and workplace safety requirements.
• Strong inspection, observational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to interpret regulations and apply them to client operations and site conditions.
• Familiarity with environmental sampling and monitoring techniques involving air quality, noise, water, or hazardous materials.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings clearly to clients.
• Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic data-management systems.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and client priorities.
• Detail-oriented, organized, dependable, and able to work independently and collaboratively.
• Professional judgment and discretion when working with clients and regulatory agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with retail food, public pool, housing, water quality, medical waste, body art, or hazardous materials programs.
• Knowledge of HACCP principles, food safety, hazard communication, ergonomics, chemical safety, and exposure-control practices.
• Experience with industrial hygiene instruments, including air-sampling pumps, sound-level meters, and indoor air-quality monitoring equipment.
• OSHA 30-Hour certification or other relevant occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or EHS certification.
• Experience preparing environmental health plans, compliance programs, technical reports, or employee training.

Additional Requirements

• Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel to client sites.
• Ability to maintain all licenses, registrations, and certifications required for the position.
• Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends based on client or project needs.
• Ability to interact professionally with clients, employees, contractors, government representatives, and members of the public.

Working Conditions

• Combination of remote, office, and field-based work.
• Regular travel to client sites, commercial facilities, educational campuses, industrial environments, construction areas, and other regulated locations.
• Fieldwork may involve outdoor conditions, active work areas, varying temperatures, noise, odors, and other environmental conditions.
• Work must be performed in accordance with applicable safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements.
• Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs, access inspection areas, and lift or carry sampling and safety equipment as needed.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $45.00 - $65.00 per hour
