POSITION OVERVIEW
Working lead for a small fabrication crew on a travel assignment at a food plant. Industrial and hands-on. You manage the project and you know stainless fabrication, metal layout, and metal production well enough to lead millwrights as a fabrication crew. You say when work is not ready.
The Site Manager owns on-site work through two phases:
- Phase A (first 2 to 3 weeks): rigging-heavy stand-up. Lift and install heavy items with support equipment. Get the field shop ready to produce.
- Phase B: from provided drawings, run precise stainless steel fabrications for a food-grade facility.
This crew is the same crew as the companion Millwright posting.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee site safety for the crew, vendors, and contractors
- Coordinate site work so it meets the schedule
- Manage the project, the people, and the problems with professionalism
- Hold quality from layout through finished stainless work
- Watch costs and work to limit overruns
- Supervise a millwright fabrication crew and coordinate vendors and other on-site resources
- Manage scope, schedule, equipment inventory, and deliverables
- Keep the project plan current and document site work
- Know enough about mechanical trades, rigging, forklift work, and stainless fabrication to lead the work, not only to report on it
DAILY WORK
- Lead daily work for a fabrication crew
- Direct Phase A: rigging-heavy lift and install of heavy items with support equipment. Use straps, chains, forklifts, and other support gear as the work requires
- Direct Phase B: drawing-driven food-grade stainless builds. Metal layout, fit-up, weld quality, finishes, hygiene, and punch items
- Coordinate with the crew, suppliers, vendors, and stakeholders
- Read construction, fabrication, and technical drawings. Catch problems before metal is cut
- Write reports, keep schedules and resource calendars current, lead and attend meetings, and update the Project Manager and stakeholders
- Enforce site safety. Stop work that is unsafe or not ready
- Keep equipment, consumables, and shop tools accounted for on a travel job
REQUIREMENTS
- Management or technical degree and/or equivalent field experience
- 3 or more years leading a fabrication, millwright, or industrial construction crew on metal production work. Stainless steel and food-grade work preferred
- Working understanding of stainless steel fabrication, metal layout, and metal production
- Ability to plan and run rigging of heavy loads with straps and chains, and to operate or direct forklift and other support equipment
- Competency with project documentation and plan updates. MS Office required. Other tools TBD by project
- Valid driver license and ability to travel on the rotation below
- Ability to work on a live industrial site around plant traffic, weather, noise, and field-shop conditions
QUALIFICATIONS
- Solid understanding of metal layout, stainless fabrication practice, food-grade hygiene and finishes, and drawing-driven production
- Excellent communication, problem solving, and time management
- Leads skilled trades with respect and experience. Does not hide behind a clipboard
- Computer literate with MS Office (Word, Excel, Teams, and Project or equivalent)
- Reads construction, fabrication, and other technical drawings
- PMP certification or equivalent project-plan experience is a strong plus. This role keeps the project plan current and documents the work
- Forklift qualification preferred
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred
- Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD experience is a plus
- Nice to have only: experience installing or integrating automated manufacturing or material handling equipment. That background is welcome. It is not the hiring bar
