The Opportunity
The Controls Engineer III develops and delivers automation and control-system solutions and takes responsibility for complete projects or significant portions of broader engineering efforts. Engineers at this level are expected to determine the work necessary to achieve assigned outcomes, coordinate that work with others, and carry it through design, development, integration, testing, and implementation.
Controls Engineers III work with substantial independence, solving technical and execution problems while recognizing risks or decisions that require broader involvement. The role provides opportunities to deepen technical capability, exercise project-level judgment, and provide technical direction or guidance to others.
What You’ll Do
Core Responsibilities:
- Take responsibility for the engineering execution of complete projects or significant portions of broader engineering efforts, determining the deliverables and individual tasks necessary to achieve the required outcome.
- Develop and implement automation and control-system solutions through design, development, integration, testing, implementation, and issue resolution.
- Coordinate technical work and interfaces with other engineers, disciplines, project teams, customers, and partners as required for successful delivery.
- Identify and resolve technical and execution problems, evaluate potential solutions, and escalate issues or decisions requiring broader involvement.
- Monitor engineering progress, quality, risks, and dependencies and take action to keep assigned work on track.
- Complete assigned engineering responsibilities with limited direction while keeping appropriate stakeholders informed of significant decisions, risks, and changes.
- This position may require up to 50% overnight travel based on project and business needs. Travel may vary throughout the year from little or no travel during local assignments to extended travel while supporting projects outside the employee's home market.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Coordinate technical activities and interfaces across engineering, project teams, customers, partners, and other disciplines as required for successful delivery.
- Serve as a primary technical point of contact for assigned projects or engineering efforts, communicating status, decisions, technical needs, and risks to appropriate stakeholders.
- Identify communication or coordination gaps that could affect delivery and take action to resolve them.
- Communicate problems requiring broader involvement with sufficient context, potential solutions, and expected impacts to support timely decisions.
- Adapt technical communication to the needs and knowledge of customers, project teams, and technical contributors.
Quality, Safety & Process:
- Apply company policies, quality requirements, engineering practices, and established processes throughout assigned engineering work.
- Follow all safety requirements, identify and communicate unsafe conditions, and stop or escalate work when necessary to protect people, equipment, or operations.
- Plan and perform appropriate technical reviews, checks, and testing to ensure engineering deliverables and integrated systems meet applicable requirements.
- Identify quality, safety, or process risks affecting assigned work and take appropriate action to resolve them, including engaging others when broader involvement is required.
- Identify and recommend practical improvements to engineering practices and processes based on project experience and lessons learned.
Leadership & Organizational Influence:
- Promote a professional, collaborative, and respectful work environment through consistent actions, communication, and interactions with others.
- Provide technical guidance, feedback, and informal mentoring to less experienced team members as opportunities arise.
- Share technical knowledge and lessons learned and help others understand engineering practices, project requirements, and effective approaches to completing their work.
- Provide technical direction to others when coordinating engineering work for assigned projects or systems.
People Leadership:
- This role does not normally have formal responsibility for managing employees. Employees may provide technical direction, mentoring, and feedback to others.
- Employees preparing to transition to the people-management career track may also be assigned supervisory responsibilities as part of a documented development plan.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or another pertinent technical discipline.
- Typically 4 or more years of relevant experience, with demonstrated capability consistent with the expectations of the role.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong working knowledge of engineering, automation, and control-system concepts, with the ability to apply that knowledge across complete projects or significant engineering efforts.
- Ability to interpret, apply, and reconcile project requirements, drawings, specifications, procedures, standards, and other technical information.
- Ability to learn and work effectively with new engineering tools, software, platforms, equipment, and customer technologies as assignments require.
- Sound technical judgment, including evaluating problems and risks, developing potential solutions, and recognizing when additional expertise or broader involvement is needed.
- Effective written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to organize and prioritize engineering work, manage competing needs, follow through on commitments, and communicate risks that could affect successful delivery.
- Commitment to quality, safety, professional conduct, and continuous improvement.
