The Semiconductor Business Unit provides solutions for customers in pathfinding, yield learning, and failure analysis. As a member of this team, you will work with companies on the edge of semiconductor innovation as they develop and characterize the processes that will lead to the technologies of tomorrow.

Discover Impactful Work

As an Applications Development Scientist, you will play a customer-focused role dedicated to developing and releasing innovative applications that deliver fast, reliable characterization solutions for semiconductor customers. Acting as the voice of the customer, you will bridge customer needs with Field Application Specialists, Product Marketing, and R&D teams to ensure new product developments address real-world semiconductor manufacturing and process development challenges. You will partner closely with customers to lead the first adoption of new TEM solutions and validate their performance in advanced semiconductor manufacturing environments.

A Day in the Life:

Partner directly with semiconductor customers to understand their application requirements, process challenges, and technology roadmaps. Lead first adoption programs for new TEM solutions, evaluate new application workflows, collaborate with R&D to translate customer needs into product specifications, support troubleshooting activities, and contribute to scientific publications and customer collaborations that drive innovation.

What to expect:

  • Partner with semiconductor customers to understand application needs and process challenges.
  • Serve as the customer advocate throughout the Product Management Process (PMP).
  • Lead first adoption programs for new TEM products and applications at customer sites.
  • Validate workflows, collect customer feedback, and support successful implementation.
  • Evaluate new application solutions and collect test data to optimize performance.
  • Collaborate with R&D and Product Marketing to translate customer requirements into product specifications.
  • Develop customer-centric application documentation, value propositions, and best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software and hardware issues as an application expert.
  • Provide technical support to Sales, Service, Manufacturing, Customer Service, and R&D teams.
  • Support customer collaborations, scientific publications, and conference presentations.
  • Travel internationally up to 25–50%.

Keys to Success:

Education

  • University degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline required.
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience using TEM instrumentation in semiconductor, materials science, or related fields.
  • Experience with DualBeam systems is highly desirable.
  • Experience in semiconductor manufacturing, research institutes, or fabrication environments focused on development, process control, or failure analysis preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong expertise in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and electron microscopy applications.
  • Proficiency in technology diagnostics, troubleshooting, operational optimization, and electron/ion microscope operation.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes and characterization challenges.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with 4D STEM, EELS, Recipe Editor, Smart Automation, or scripting languages such as Python or MATLAB is an advantage.
  • Ability to contribute to scientific papers and technical publications.
  • Professional working proficiency in English is required; additional language skills are beneficial.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 25–50%.
  • Valid passport or ability to obtain one.
