The Role

We are seeking an experienced Supervisor of Surgical Services for a full-time permanent Day Shift role in Waterloo, IA. This leadership position plays a key role in managing daily operations within the surgical department, ensuring high-quality patient outcomes and smooth workflow across perioperative services.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations within the Surgical Services department, ensuring efficient scheduling, workflow, and patient throughput.
• Provide direct leadership, coaching, and performance management to OR staff, including RNs, scrub techs, and support staff.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory, safety, and accreditation standards (including Joint Commission).
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary teams to improve communication and overall efficiency.
• Assist with surgical staffing plans, onboarding, and ongoing training initiatives.
• Monitor and manage inventory, equipment readiness, and supply usage to support effective OR operations.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and surgical outcomes.
• Maintain accurate documentation and support departmental reporting and metrics.

Physical Demands

Supervisors in Surgical Services may be required to:

• Stand or walk for prolonged periods in perioperative areas.
• Lift, move, or position equipment (typically 20–40 lbs).
• Assist clinical staff in high-acuity environments when needed.
• Navigate fast-paced surgical settings with frequent interruptions and urgent needs.

Qualifications

• Active Iowa RN license (required).
• Minimum 3 years of perioperative nursing experience; leadership or charge nurse experience preferred.
• Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) preferred but not required.
• Strong understanding of OR operations, sterile technique, and surgical workflows.
• Excellent communication, team-building, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities within a busy surgical environment.
