Position Summary:
Provide leadership and utilize decision-making skills to oversee the instructional program at TLC. Coordinate the activities of teachers and educational support staff for TLC’s special education programs. Participate with the Executive Director in developing and implementing policy, recruiting staff, establishing professional development activities, grant preparation, organizing events, and preparing for audits.
Qualifications:
Education & Knowledge: Master’s Degree in Special Education
License: NYS Certification in Students with Disabilities (Birth-Grade 2), Students with Disabilities (All Grades), or Permanent Special Education.
Certification in School Administration and Supervision (SAS/SBL) or enrolled in an approved study program.
Work Experience: Three years appropriate teaching experience, and the ability to supervise a staff of varying educational and experiential backgrounds.
Requirements: Sensitivity to the needs of children and awareness of what constitutes a sound educational program for preschool children with developmental delays. Emotional maturity and stability.
Clearance through New York State and other mandated NYC Department of Education Background/Fingerprint check(s). Required to complete the mandatory two hours of training in child abuse maltreatment identification, reporting, and prevention.
Skills & Abilities: Excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills. Supervisory skills; work closely with Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Floaters, Social Worker, Psychologist, and School Nurse. Collaborate with parents on the developmental needs of their child.
Experience in conducting educational evaluations. Knowledge in NYSED, NYCPS, CPSE, and NYCDOHMH Article 47 regulations. Experience working with Microsoft Office 365.
Essential Job Function & Responsibilities of Education Director:
- Plan, organize, and establish school systems (protocols, policy, and procedures).
- Hire, supervise, and evaluate all educational personnel, including teachers, teacher assistants, administrative support staff, and Clinical Coordinator.
- Supervise the School Nurse, the Social Worker, the School Psychologist, and other staff, as applicable, to ensure compliance with regulations and optimal performance of duties.
- Supervise and participate in student enrollment (phone intake, tours, enrollment procedures) as needed with the Clinical Coordinator, School Psychologist, and Social Worker.
- Oversee the Turning 5 process to ensure all documents are received, collated, and delivered per the schedule promulgated by the NYCPS, with the assistance of Clinical Coordinator.
- Supervise CPSE evaluations and conduct educational evaluations as needed.
- Choose and implement an appropriate curriculum and assessment system. Through staff training and coaching, support the teaching staff regarding the use of the curriculum and assessment system.
- Address and resolve issues involving staff, children, and/or families as they arise.
- Communicate with families to counsel them through the CPSE process and provide guidance related to the education, development, and growth of their child.
- Coordinate team meetings, lesson planning, and case conferences with clinical and educational staff.
- Design, plan, and facilitate in-services training programs for staff.
- Maintain thorough records of administrative classroom documents such as daily schedules, class lists, student progress reports and IEPs, classroom staffing, and attendance.
- Supervise record-keeping required by governing agencies (NYSED, NYCPS, DOH, etc.) and participate in audits by those entities.
- Oversee classroom staffing and attendance. In case of extensive teacher absences, participate as needed in staffing coverage.
- Organize relationships with teacher preparation programs and act as a liaison with College/University programs, supervising fieldwork placements, and orienting student teachers to their responsibilities.
- Plan and oversee extracurricular events, including review and approval of classroom trip requests.
- Supervised the coordination of student transportation protocols.
- Monitor inventory and requisition of supplies used in each classroom.
- Participate in meetings with the Executive Director, the administrative team, and monthly IAC and Coalition meetings, as needed.
- Collaborate closely with the Executive Director to ensure the mission of TLC is upheld.
- Maintain professional development and certifications.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
