Duties
- Develop personalized recreational therapy plans incorporating music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy, yoga, equine experience, swimming, and other modalities tailored to individual needs
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments to identify interests, abilities, and therapeutic goals
- Facilitate both individual and group therapy sessions focused on behavioral health, mental health counseling, PTSD care, autism spectrum disorders, and more
- Coordinate activities that support cognitive function and emotional resilience in patients with developmental disabilities or geriatrics
- Manage case documentation including medical records, intake forms, progress notes, and therapy outcomes in compliance with HIPAA regulations
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams such as group home staff, social workers, case managers, physical therpaists, occupational therapists, speech therapists,and special education professionals to optimize patient care plans
- Lead crisis management efforts when necessary and employ behavioral management strategies to ensure a safe environment
- Collect data on therapy effectiveness and adjust programs accordingly to meet evolving needs
- Instruct caregivers to assist individuals through dancing, singing (music therapy), art projects, assisted living activities, or therapeutic riding (equine experience) to promote physical activity and emotional expression
Experience
- Proven experience in recreational therapy or related fields such as music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy or behavioral health counseling
- Extensive background working with individuals with disabilities—including autism spectrum disorders
- Familiarity with medical terminology, medical documentation practices, and diagnostic evaluation processes
- Experience in home & community care environments as well as institutional settings such as group homes and day supports
- Knowledge of HIPAA compliance standards for protected health information (PHI) management
- Demonstrated ability to conduct patient assessments and develop tailored therapeutic interventions
- Skills in crisis management and behavior management techniques for diverse populations including pediatrics and geriatrics
- Ability to facilitate engaging group activities while maintaining a safe environment for all participants
