Security & Network Intern Position Summary The Security & Network Intern will support the organization’s cybersecurity and network operations teams in maintaining a secure, reliable, and resilient technology environment. This role provides hands-on experience with enterprise security tools, network infrastructure, and operational processes, while contributing to real-world security initiatives and projects. Internship Duration: May – August 2026 Location: Bar Harbor, Maine / Remote / Hybrid Key Responsibilities Assist in monitoring security alerts and events using SIEM and endpoint detection tools Support basic network administration tasks (e.g., switch/router configuration, VLANs, IP management) Participate in vulnerability scanning and remediation tracking Help document network diagrams, security controls, and operational procedures Assist with user access reviews and identity governance activities Support incident response efforts, including triage and documentation Perform log analysis to identify anomalies or potential threats Contribute to security awareness initiatives and documentation Assist in maintaining asset inventories and configuration baselines Participate in special projects such as zero trust initiatives, MFA rollouts, or network segmentation Learning Opportunities Exposure to enterprise tools (e.g., firewalls, SIEM, EDR, IAM platforms) Understanding of cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., NIST, CIS Controls) Hands-on experience with networking fundamentals and troubleshooting Participation in security assessments and risk analysis activities Mentorship from senior security and network professionals Required Qualifications Currently pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching) Familiarity with cybersecurity principles (CIA triad, least privilege, defense-in-depth) Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly (written and verbal) Preferred Qualifications Exposure to tools such as Wireshark, Splunk, Microsoft Defender, or similar Familiarity with Active Directory / Entra ID environments Basic scripting experience (PowerShell, Python, or Bash) Understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) Interest in pursuing certifications (e.g., Security , Network ) Hourly Rate: $20.00 / hour #CA-EH8 About JAX: The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center and nearly 3,000 employees in locations across the United States (Maine, Connecticut, California), Japan and China.
