Job Summary:
The Shop Assistant supports experienced Diesel Technicians by performing routine maintenance. Responsible for assisting with light equipment repairs, maintaining a clean work area, organizing tools and safely handling/disposing of hazardous materials. Run errands, picking up parts, and assisting technicians with lifting heavy components.
Essential Functions:
• Performs preparatory work for maintenance activities, including gathering equipment, materials and supplies and laying out materials and equipment for projects.
• Responsible for the verifying and stocking of incoming parts, picking up and delivering to the shop, as needed.
• Cleaning equipment, sweeping, general cleaning, painting and organizing to ensure a safe environment, organizing tools, and safely handling/disposing of hazardous materials.
• Experience operating a forklift loading and unloading deliveries & materials.
• Performs a variety of routine physical labor tasks including, emptying trash bins, replacing bulbs, cleaning work areas and performing touch up work as needed.
• Performs clean up at the end of the day or when a job is completed, including picking up tools and cleaning spills or debris.
• Safely operate a Company vehicle for pickup and delivery duties.
• Assist Inventory Controller with maintaining inventory volumes and keeping inventory organized.
• Performs all work in accordance with Company’s established procedures.
• Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Company / OSHA standards.
• Performs escort services when needed, for oversized loads, during transportation operations.
• Performs any other duties as assigned.
Competencies or Experience Requirements
• Valid Driver’s License
• Clean driving record
• Basic knowledge of automotive/diesel/equipment parts and maintenance
• Previous work experience in a mechanical shop setting 1-3 years preferred
• Ability to follow instructions, basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand tools
• Ability to lift up to 50-100 pounds, stand for long periods and work in a fast-paced environment
• Proactive and willing to learn new skills
• Strong team player with good communication skills
• High attention to detail and strong focus on safety
• Strong organizational skills
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Ability to work in a team environment
Education Requirements
High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
Safety
Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
Travel
Travel to job sites is required as needed.
