Volunteer Recreation Coordinator (Athletics & Arts)

Reports To: Director of Programs and Mentorship
Compensation: Volunteer (Unpaid)
Hours: Flexible; includes some evenings and weekends. Occasional overnight opportunities may be available.

The Youth Complex is a youth-led nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people, particularly those from underserved communities, through mentorship, leadership development, recreation, and community engagement. Position Summary
The Volunteer Recreation Coordinator (Athletics & Arts) supports the planning, facilitation, and delivery of youth-centered athletics and arts programming. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about mentoring youth and using creative or physical activity as a pathway to growth, connection, and empowerment.
The Coordinator works closely with youth participants, staff, volunteers, and community partners to create engaging, inclusive, and safe recreational experiences. This role includes hands-on program facilitation, event support, youth mentorship, and collaboration with the Director of Programs and Mentorship.
While this is a volunteer role, it offers meaningful leadership experience and the opportunity to make a direct impact on young people’s lives.
Key ResponsibilitiesRecreation Program Development & Delivery
- Support and facilitate youth programming in athletics and/or arts (sports, fitness, creative arts, performance, or visual arts).
- Help design and lead engaging activities, workshops, or sessions that reflect youth interests and strengths.
- Create inclusive, safe, and supportive environments where youth feel confident participating and expressing themselves.
- Assist with lesson planning or activity structure for ongoing programming.
Event Planning & Facilitation
- Support recreation-based events such as games, tournaments, showcases, performances, exhibitions, or community celebrations.
- Assist with event logistics including setup, materials, space coordination, and youth supervision.
- Facilitate or co-lead group activities during programs and events.
Youth Mentorship & Support
- Build positive, trusting relationships with youth participants.
- Support youth in developing confidence, teamwork, leadership, and goal-setting skills.
- Serve as a consistent, encouraging adult role model.
- Provide one-on-one and group mentorship during recreation programming.
Volunteer & Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with other volunteers, mentors, and staff to strengthen program quality.
- Support new volunteers or mentors participating in athletics or arts programming.
- Share observations, feedback, and youth progress with the Director of Programs and Mentorship.
Reflection & Program Improvement
- Participate in program reflection and continuous improvement conversations.
- Assist with collecting attendance, participation notes, or youth feedback as needed.
- Help identify opportunities to strengthen youth engagement and program impact.
Community Engagement
- Represent The Youth Complex at community events, partner sites, or recreation-based activities when requested.
- Support relationship-building with local artists, coaches, organizations, or community partners.
Qualifications
Required
- Passion for youth development, mentorship, and community impact.
- Interest or experience in athletics, arts, recreation, coaching, or creative programming.
- Experience working with youth in a formal or informal setting.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Comfortable leading groups and engaging youth from diverse backgrounds.
- Reliable, flexible, and willing to be hands-on.
- Ability to commit to a consistent volunteer schedule.
- Willingness to complete a background check and onboarding process.
Preferred
- Experience facilitating recreation, athletics, or arts programming.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed, restorative, or youth-centered practices.
- Bilingual or multilingual (Spanish or Haitian Creole a plus).
- Basic organizational or documentation skills.
Time Commitment & Volunteer Nature of Role
This is a volunteer position with a recommended commitment of 12-15 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months. Evening and weekend availability may be required depending on programming. Overnight opportunities for retreats or special events may occasionally be available and are optional.
