Water Fitness Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  Conduct safe and responsible water fitness classes for the YMCA. Responsible for providing leadership in water exercise programs and providing members with safe, knowledgeable and fun exercise experiences.  Assist members, program members, and staff with friendly, knowledgeable service in a professional manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide safe exercise environment, extend leadership to wellness activities, provide variety and make exercise fun.
2. Instruct Fitness classes in compliance with YMCA standards.
3. Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants in the Y and on phone, contributing to member retention.
4. Facilities, equipment and Class Programs will be clean and well maintained at the highest level.
5. Build relationships with members, program participants, and community partners; helps members connect with each other
6. Teach and role model YMCA mission and vision.
7. Know and follow all emergency procedures.
8. Emphasize safety and proper technique.
9. Participate in program meetings and workshops as scheduled.
10. Assist with special events as scheduled including the Annual Campaign and other fundraising events.
11. Understand, discuss and promote all YMCA programs.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Upholding the YMCA’s commitment to the safety and well-being of youth in our programs is a core responsibility of all staff regardless of position.

1. Attend required abuse risk management training.
2. Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
3. Adhere to procedures related to managing and supervising high-risk activities.
4. Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
5. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be at least 16 years of age.
2. Relationship Skills: friendly, outgoing, creative, flexible, team player
3. Communication Skills: verbal and written skills, polite telephone etiquette, listening skills
4. Member Service: problem solver, sales experience, ability to effectively relate to diverse groups of people from social and economic segments of community.
5. Must be able to perform, demonstrate, and teach the work skills and movements out of the individual class.
6. Certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid, New Staff Member Orientation within 90days of hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Noise in the workplace is typically moderate and sometimes loud with persistent white noise 
2. Extended exposure to water and Aquatics Center environments, may include:
   • Being in the pool for extended periods of time (temps ranging 80 – 94 degrees).
   • Air temps as high as 96 degrees.
   • Air Humidity is commonly around 60% but may vary by day.
3. Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance, in normal and loud situations.
4. Recognize distress signals through sight and sound in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around pool area. 
5. See and observe all class participants at all times.
