Position Description 

We seek an inspiring and energized educator who can contribute the following to our spirited community:  

• Foster joy and enthusiasm for literature and language in a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.  
• Imagine and implement creative and rigorous approaches to course design, supporting a range of critical reading, writing, and thinking skills.  
• Expand opportunities for cultural fluency and responsiveness through curricula rooted in diverse perspectives and experiences.  
• Collaborate constructively with colleagues on innovative and interdisciplinary course design.  
• Engage proactively to meet the social, emotional, and intellectual needs of learners in an upper school.  
• Reflect on individual pedagogical practices for ongoing professional growth and improvement. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Teach four sections of foundational English courses, which could include foundational courses in literature and language and upper-level seminar-style electives. All courses in the Upper School English department reflect expertise, encourage exploration, and contribute to a strong and compelling school transcript. 
• Build students’ skills in literary analysis, close reading, research, and communication. 
• Create a classroom community where students feel comfortable sharing ideas, listening to one another, and engaging in respectful discussion.
• Serve as an advisor to a small group of students and contribute to a grade-level team.
• Partner with colleagues to shape curriculum, align expectations across courses, and integrate interdisciplinary opportunities when appropriate.
• Communicate clearly with students and families to support growth and celebrate progress.
• Participate fully in the life of the school, including community events, experiential programming, and duty assignments.
• Engage actively in professional learning that enhances instructional practice and aligns with the mission of the school. 

Position Requirements 

• Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field required; advanced degree preferred. 
• Passion for literature, writing, and helping students find joy and success in both. 
• Experience teaching multiple high school levels. 
• Knowledge of what academic challenge looks like in grades 9–12 and how to differentiate instruction to provide appropriate rigor. 
• Strong classroom management rooted in building trust, belonging, and high expectations with high support. 
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with a collaborative mindset. 
• Demonstrated ability to: 
• Create a welcoming and respectful classroom culture. 
• Assess and document student learning through varied methods. 
• Interest in contributing to programs outside the classroom, such as clubs, activities, travel, or arts experiences.
