We’re on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you’ll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.

About Our Team

The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.

Why This Role Matters

The Washington Post seeks a versatile production engineer to manage the control room, studio builds and technical execution for an upcoming slate of new video shows. This role will anchor our daily operation and is central to building new forms of storytelling and audience engagement using multimedia.

We are looking for a candidate who combines journalistic rigor with an understanding of creator-era storytelling. This role will be the bridge between editorial vision and on-screen reality, ensuring that what our hosts say is matched by strong visuals, clean transitions and reliable studio performance. As we transition into more live, personality-driven formats, their technical execution will determine the pace, polish and professionalism of our productions.

This position will also play a key part in modernizing our studio ecosystem, helping us build scalable spaces and workflows for future shows and major upcoming launches. This will include advising on set design and layouts, as well as finding ways to make the most of existing spaces so they feel fresh and engaging.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in control rooms, ideally for shows designed and built for the internet. They will be nimble operators who can juggle a variety of production tasks with creativity and execution.

What Motivates You

  • You balance a keen eye for visuals with operational savvy.
  • You’re comfortable working with tight daily deadlines and short turnaround times.
  • You have a hands-on and creative approach to filming and managing our spaces.
  • You take pride in keeping productions running smoothly, even when plans shift at the last minute.

How You’ll Support The Mission

  • Run control room for live and daily shoots.
  • Handle camera switching, graphics cueing and troubleshooting.
  • Review rundowns for missing assets before showtime.
  • Collaborate on set improvements, lighting and gear purchases.
  • Be the on-field camera operator for man on the streets and other one off shoots.
  • Contribute to building out new studio spaces, including but not limited to advising on set-design, improving existing production spaces.

The Skills And Experience You Bring

  • 3-5 years work experience
  • Has experience in live-show control rooms, preferably on digital shows made for the internet.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, which may include some mornings, evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Experience with live-production software such as OBS, Streamlabs, and Wirecast, including managing remote setups, adding on-screen elements, and executing transitions.
  • Experience operating cameras such as the Sony RX series, Blackmagic, and Sony A7S for field shoots.
  • Understanding of cinematography principles, on-set and field videography, and strong composition fundamentals.

Collaboration makes us stronger. That’s why our offices are designed with open layouts, modern technology, and easy access to transportation. With certain exceptions for newsgathering and business travel, we work on-site five days a week.
