About Our Team

The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.

Why This Role Matters

The Press Freedom Content Strategist plays a key role in advancing our mission to champion press freedom worldwide. Through the creation of compelling editorial and digital content, this position elevates urgent cases, informs engaged audiences, and helps drive public support for global press freedom. With strong writing, editorial judgment, and a strategic mindset, the person in this role ensures our content is timely, impactful, and aligned with the needs of journalists under threat. The ideal candidate is a highly adaptable self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, learns quickly, takes initiative without waiting for direction, and can think several steps ahead to help shape and support a growing program.

This is a part-time role up to 25 hours per week.

What Motivates You

  • You believe storytelling has the power to drive change and bring visibility to critical human rights issues.
  • You are energized by crafting content that informs, mobilizes, and inspires action.
  • You enjoy working at the intersection of editorial strategy and audience engagement.
  • You thrive in fast-moving environments where you can balance long-term planning with rapid-response opportunities.
  • You care deeply about the role of journalism in a democratic society and want to help protect those who practice it.

How You'll Support the Mission

  • Produce and distribute a twice-weekly press freedom newsletter to build audience trust, grow reach, and elevate key issues.
  • Develop and publish high-performing social content across Freedom Desk platforms (Instagram and X) to expand reach, engage new audiences, and translate complex press freedom issues into accessible, compelling narratives.
  • Create short-form video content for social platforms to make complex press freedom topics more accessible and engaging.
  • Research, write, and publish timely features, interviews, and updates that highlight the voices of journalists and frontline press freedom developments.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external experts to ensure content is accurate, mission-aligned, and grounded in strong editorial standards.
  • Maintain and manage an editorial calendar that balances strategic planning with the flexibility to publish rapid-response content as news breaks.
  • Analyze email and social content performance data to iterate strategy and improve engagement, retention, and impact.
  • Design and execute multimedia campaigns that raise awareness for urgent press freedom cases and drive public action.
  • Coordinate with partner organizations to extend campaign visibility, reinforce shared narratives, and align outreach efforts.
  • Contribute to growth and experimentation efforts by taking on ad hoc assignments that test new formats or storytelling channels.

Qualifications

The Skills and Experience You Bring

  • 3 years of experience in content strategy, journalism, digital marketing, or strategic communications—ideally in an advocacy, nonprofit, or mission-driven setting.
  • Exceptional editorial judgment with demonstrated ability to write and edit content that informs, persuades, and activates.
  • Experience managing newsletters, editorial calendars, or cross-platform content programs with measurable results.
  • Ability to translate complex legal, political, or global issues into engaging, human-centered storytelling.
  • Familiarity with campaign development, video production, and/or digital advertising strategies.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively across departments and with external partners.

  • A commitment to press freedom, human rights, and equity in storytelling.
