Salary & The hourly pay range for this position is $36.87 - $47,06. The starting hourly

Brief Description Performs various essential technical and fiefdwork duties relating to current fire
of Duties: prevention methods, fire inspections, and enforcement of adopted Codes and
Ordinances for the Village of Skokie and the Skokie Fire Department; inspects
existing and new commercial properties for Code & Ordinance compliance;
Conducts ongoing fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire pump, and installed systems
inspections; Participates in community educational programs; Conducts final fire
safety occupancy inspections, final fire prevention system tests for newly
installed systems, and various high-risk occupancy fire inspections; Keeps
current with new or amended Codes & Ordinances; Monitors underground
chemical and petroleum storage tank instaliation and removal; Responds on
short notice and/or late night to address fire prevention/investigation issues;
Conducts hyctrant flow & hydrostatic tests; Works closely with Skokie
businesses, the Village Building department, Village staff, and the general
public; Provides performance reports as defined by Division Chief of Fire
Prevention to promote accountability and continuous improvement; Performs
other work-refated duties as assigned.
Required Must possess a valid Driver's License; High School diploma or equivalent
Traininq and required; Coilege-ievel coursework in fire protection and code enforcement
Knowledge: preferred; Fire protection experience or equivalent experience required; Illinois
Fire inspector I designation required; Illinois Basic or Advanced Fire Prevention
Officer designation preferred; Extensive knowledge and understanding of
Village, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Internationai Fire Code
(IFC), and international Building Code (IBC) codes; Must possess excellent
verbal & written communication skills and be proficient using computers and
basic office technology; image Trend and BS&A report management system
experience desired; Must foilow all safety ruies of the Vitiage and the Fire Dept.

JOB PURPOSE
Performs a variety of essential tasks including, but not limited to, technical and field work
related to current fire prevention methods, fire inspections and enforcement of the adopted

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Inspects existing and new commercial properties and construction for applicabie code and
- Conducts ongoing annual fire, fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire pump, and other installed
- Conducts finai fire safety occupancy inspections.
- Conducts final fire prevention system tests for newly installed systems.
- Participates in educational programs for the citizens of Skokie.
- Conducts various high-risk occupancy fire inspections as assigned.
- Performs a wide variety of computer-generated entries of records and reports.
- Completes Pre-lncident Plans and enters data into the Fire Prevention Bureau programs.
- Conducts hydrant flow and hydrostatic tests.

- Provides follow-up inspections on complaints, requests, and other Fire Prevention related
- Fosters and maintains professional relationships with representatives of the business
- Manages inspection district(s) and workload to ensure annual metrics are met.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains familiarity with new or amended codes and ordinances.
- Witnesses underground chemical and petroleum storage tank removal and instaliation.
- Responds in short notice and/or late night to address fire prevention/investigation issues.
- Provides performance reports as defined by Division Chief of Fire Prevention to promote
- Performs other work-related duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of Village, National Fire Protection Association
- Understanding of architectural drawings and essential mathematical calculations.
- Technical understanding of fire prevention system operation and installation.
- Ability to communicate effectiveiy with citizens, developers, owners and the genera! public.
- Ability to ensure compliance with life and property safety requirements.
- Demonstrated administrative organizational skills, induding coordinating inspection
- Must be able to operate general office equipment, be adept in using personal computers,
software and computer programs.
- Ability to follow all safety rules of the Viiiage and the Fire Department.

- Illinois Fire Inspector I required.
- Fire protection experience or equivalent experience required.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The duties performed by this position are representative of light work with occasional exertion
of 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. The work is split between
office and fieldwork environments. Such outside environments can include high decibel noise,
changes in environmental temperature and protection, and hazardous work environments
involving gaseous fumes, moving mechanical parts, and work conditions involving various
ievels of light. May be subject to frequent interruptions from telephone callers while in the
office.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand,
stoop, climb, crouch, kneel, use office and smaii technical equipment, read written reports,
and do calculations depending upon the work situation. Visual and audible acuity is essential.
The employee is frequently required to be outside of the office and operate a motor vehicle to
perform essential work functions.
