Job Purpose: Technical Mastery and Course Management
The Athletics Assistant Coach – Golf is responsible for the technical skill development and strategic growth of student-athletes within a competitive high school program. This role focuses on refining swing mechanics, mastering the short game, and improving situational course management. Working under the guidance of the Head Coach, this position aims to cultivate a sophisticated golf IQ and a resilient team culture rooted in integrity, inclusion, and athletic progression.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Instruction and Skill Programming
Player Development: Assist in planning and supervising daily practice sessions that balance range work, putting green drills, and on-course play.
Swing Mechanics: Provide individualized instruction on grip, alignment, and swing plane to improve consistency and ball-striking across various skill levels.
Short Game Specialization: Lead focused sessions on chipping, pitching, and bunker play, emphasizing touch and green-reading proficiency.
Course Strategy: Mentor athletes on "managing the map," including club selection, hazard avoidance, and maintaining mental composure during high-pressure rounds.
Program Leadership and Athlete Mentorship
Team Culture: Proactively foster a disciplined yet supportive environment that encourages personal growth while maintaining a cohesive team identity.
Athlete Development: Mentor student-athletes in an urban school setting, emphasizing etiquette, sportsmanship, and the balance between academic excellence and athletic commitment.
Communication: Maintain professional and proactive communication with athletes regarding practice locations, tee times, and tournament expectations.
Compliance: Ensure all activities adhere to school and CIF/league regulations; maintain all required coaching certifications and safety standards.
Operations and Match Management
Equipment Stewardship: Manage and maintain team equipment, including range balls, training aids, and team apparel.
Competition Management: Attend all matches and tournaments to supervise warm-ups, monitor pace of play, and provide mid-round technical or tactical encouragement.
Travel & Supervision: Fulfill supervisory duties by coordinating transportation to various Bay Area golf courses and ensuring athlete conduct remains exemplary off-campus.
Collaboration: Actively participate in coaching staff meetings and work closely with the Head Coach to finalize match lineups and scoring strategies.
Qualifications and Skills
Experience: Previous experience as a competitive golfer or coach at the high school or collegiate level preferred.
Education: Undergraduate degree preferred.
Sport Knowledge: Deep understanding of USGA rules, swing biomechanics, and the nuances of various course layouts.
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills: A positive, patient, and highly organized coaching style. Ability to motivate and connect with teenagers in a structured school environment.
Certifications: Current CPR/First Aid Certification and CIF coaching credentials are mandatory (or must be obtained prior to the season).
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
The role requires a consistent outdoor presence during the Spring season, involving weekday afternoons and periodic full-day tournament travel.
Essential Physical Tasks
Mobility: Ability to walk 9–18 holes of golf (frequently over uneven terrain) while carrying equipment or coaching from a cart.
Demonstration: Ability to physically demonstrate swing techniques, putting strokes, and various specialty shots.
Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs (e.g., golf bags and training equipment).
