Job Summary
The Assistant Director, Utilities serves as the university’s operational leader and expert for all aspects of our utilities and infrastructure. Duties include but are not limited to ensuring utility plants stay in compliance with all regulatory requirements, the infrastructure is maintained at an acceptable level to support business continuity, and the building automation system is monitored appropriately.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
- Oversees the operational aspects of the university’s utility plants in multiple geographic locations.
- Provides fiscal oversight for all assigned cost centers including budget authority responsibility.
- Responsible for ensuring university utilities and infrastructure are maintained to established standards that supports business continuity and university operations.
- Plans, develops, and directs university preventive maintenance programs on all utility and infrastructure systems.
- Establishes and implements policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state, local, federal regulations.
- Responsible for managing facility contract services and monitors work performance to ensure compliance with contractual obligation and customer satisfaction.
- Collaborates with faculty, staff, business partners, and vendors to ensure we are successful in supporting the university’s mission.
- Serve as technical expert on capital projects as it relates to utilities and infrastructure.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business, science, engineering, or a related field is required.
- Three (3) years’ experience in utilities.
- May accept a combination of education and experience.
- Valid Texas driver’s license (Not subject to suspension and eligible to drive a motor vehicle owned or leased by the University of Texas System.)
Preferred Education / Experience
- Five (5) years’ of demonstrated success as a department manager for a university of higher education is required.

- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in written form.
- Proficiency using computers and software packages.
- Competency with building automation systems.
- Ability to provide oversite of contracted services and meet expectations related to customer service.
- Knowledge and experience with proven ability to supervise a diverse staff.
- Knowledge of hydronic, steam, and electrical distribution systems.
- Knowledge of applicable energy codes, laws, and regulations.
- Ability to prepare budgets, projections, proposals and various reports related to utility operations and repairs

Additional Information
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
