Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Community Standards , the Assistant Director of Community Standards provides operational leadership for the Office of Community Standards and supports the administration of the University student conduct process as a learning-centered and developmental function within Student Affairs. The Assistant Director helps ensure fair, equitable, inclusive, timely, and student-centered responses to alleged behavioral and academic misconduct; supervises and develops assigned staff; oversees intake, investigation, adjudication, resolution, documentation, assessment, outreach, and follow-up; directly manages complex, sensitive, or escalated cases within delegated authority; and helps students understand their rights and responsibilities, reflect on the impact of their choices, take responsibility for their actions, and build the skills needed to participate as engaged members of the University community. The Assistant Director partners with faculty, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Title IX, Residence Life, CARE, Accessibility, Counseling, Campus Police, Athletics, and other University partners to advance community standards, academic integrity, student well-being, belonging, collaborative learning, and student success.
Statement Of Duties And Responsibilities
Supports the administration of the University student conduct process for alleged behavioral and academic misconduct involving individual students and, as assigned, student organizations, ensuring fair, equitable, student-centered, and educational resolution in alignment with Regents’ Rules and Regulations, UT System and University rules, applicable law, and matters arising on or off campus when subject to University jurisdiction.
Interprets and applies Regents’ Rules and Regulations, UT System and University rules and regulations, the UTEP Handbook of Operating Procedures, and related student conduct, academic integrity, and community standards policies in ways that support fundamental fairness, student learning, and community standards. Coordinates intake, review, investigation, adjudication, sanctioning, records management, appeals support, and follow-up within delegated authority. Works with the University’s designated Title IX office and other campus partners on matters involving alleged sex discrimination, sex-based harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, dating or domestic violence, pregnancy-related matters, or retaliation, as applicable; helps ensure reports are routed through the appropriate process; supports coordinated communication, student support, and implementation of interim or supportive measures within the role’s assigned authority; and may serve as a University representative in formal Title IX hearings when designated. Provides training, outreach, and presentations for students, faculty, staff, hearing officers, boards, student leaders, residence life personnel, student organizations, and University partners on reporting options, due process, and educational resolution practices. Supports restorative, developmental, inclusive, multi-partial, and student-centered resolution practices; addresses harm through educational responses that are not solely punitive; and assists students with responsible reintegration into the campus community. Maintains conduct records, supports required institutional reporting, coordinates with Student Affairs Leadership, Residence Life, Accessibility, Campus Police, Athletics, and other partners on elevated-risk situations, classroom concerns, academic integrity matters, and institutional or cross-functional initiatives; represents the office as assigned; maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders; and remains current on higher education conduct practice, emerging legal issues, regulatory developments, and professional best practices in student conduct, student affairs, and higher education law. Supervises assigned professional and support staff; establishes performance expectations, provides training and coaching, assigns and reviews work, evaluates performance, addresses performance issues in accordance with University policy, and assists with staffing and operational planning to support effective case management, outreach, assessment, and community standards work. Maintains knowledge of Microsoft Office software and learns and uses institutional software systems. Complies with all state and University policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s objectives, policies, and applicable laws. Provides direct supervision of assigned professional and support staff, including hiring and onboarding support, assigning and reviewing work, establishing performance expectations, providing training and coaching, completing performance evaluations, addressing performance issues in accordance with University policy, and assisting with staffing and operational needs to support effective case management and community standards work.

Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, conflict resolution, public administration, law, or a closely related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in student conduct, community standards, dean of students, student affairs, higher education administration, or a closely related area. Experience should include student conduct or community standards work in higher education; case management; investigation, hearing coordination, or adjudication of student conduct matters; policy interpretation and implementation; training, outreach, and consultation with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners; cross-functional collaboration; and supervision or staff leadership.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited university in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, conflict resolution, public administration, law, or a closely related field
Preferred Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in student conduct, community standards, dean of students, student affairs, higher education administration, or a closely related area. Preferred experience includes proficiency with Maxient or a comparable student conduct case management system; supervision or staff leadership; assessment and reporting; policy interpretation and implementation; training and outreach; restorative, developmental, or conflict-resolution practices; and cross-functional collaboration with campus partners.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of student learning and development, conflict resolution, equity-minded and culturally responsive practice, due process and fundamental fairness, behavioral intervention and threat assessment concepts, and applicable higher education laws and regulations, including FERPA, Clery, and Title IX. The ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion with highly sensitive and confidential information is required. Occasional evening, weekend, and travel obligations may be required.
