    Purpose

    Support the safe and efficient collection of solid waste, recycling, and compost across The University of Texas at Austin campus by assisting drivers with all loading, unloading, and container handling duties. Operate university-owned vehicles and equipment, and help maintain clean and functional waste collection areas.

    Responsibilities

    • Manual collection and loading of waste streams including landfill, recycling, and compost from campus buildings and outdoor containers.
    • Operate university vehicles, including pickup trucks and utility carts, to support collection and transport tasks.
    • Assist drivers with safe vehicle operation, including serving as a ground guide in tight or high-pedestrian areas.
    • Clean, sweep, and maintain dumpsters, compactors, and waste corral areas to meet university cleanliness and safety standards.
    • Follow all verbal and written instructions from Crew Leaders and Supervisors related to collection routes, priorities, and safety protocols.
    • Perform daily equipment inspections and report safety or maintenance concerns promptly.
    • Demonstrate professional conduct, including respectful communication with students, staff, and visitors, and actively support teamwork with the Solid Waste and Recycling staff.
    • Assist with special event cleanups, move-outs, or inclement weather operations as needed.
    • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support organizational goals and objectives.


    Required Qualifications

    Possess and maintain a valid Class "C" driver's license. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days of entering Texas as a new resident. High school diploma or GED. Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Willingness to perform physical labor, which includes walking, bending, lifting, and climbing, in a fast-paced environment. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Strong teamwork and communication skills. Must pass background check and pre-employment screening.

    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Possession of a valid Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Prior experience in solid waste collection, recycling services, or compost. Familiarity with university or large campus environments. Experience using basic hand tools and custodial/grounds equipment.

    Driving Required

    This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

    Salary Range

    $38,189 depending on qualifications

    Work Shift

    • 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 4:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Overtime will occasionally be required, in addition to working on weekends for football games, special events, and other university activities.

    Employment Eligibility:

    Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers.     Retirement Plan Eligibility:

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
