    General Notes

    The Marine Science Institute is a University of Texas at Austin College of Natural Sciences satellite campus located in Port Aransas, TX. Our goal is to find a like-minded professional who will support Marine Science Institute operations at the Austin Campus.

    The purpose of this role is to coordinate all Marine Science Institute operations conducted at the Austin campus. Will act as liaison for the connectivity of the Marine Science Institute programs and the coursework offered at the Austin Campus. Will play an integral role in the coordination of Teaching Assistant (TA) and Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UGTA) assignments and work duties.

    Responsibilities

    • Administrative support
      • Coordinates with the Marine Science Institute’s graduate/undergraduate program coordinator(s), Registrar’s office, and relevant faculty members to review course scheduling and to reserve classrooms in Austin. Assists with various academic functions such as course scheduling, registration, CES, FaSET, final exams and grade reporting.
      • Collaborates remotely and in-person with instructors from the Marine Science Institute and Biology Instructional Office to screen, hire, and place TAs and UGTAs into appropriate assistantships for multiple classes in relation to the needs of each department and student availability.
      • Oversees general Marine Science Institute administrative operations at the Austin campus including inventory of all lab equipment/office supplies and buying replacements as necessary. Serve as Key Signature Authority to issue keys for lab/office spaces
      • Acts as department representative in university meetings and other outreach programs as needed. Attends university meetings and act as departmental representative as needed
    • Course support
      • Leads TAs and UGTAs in laboratory session procedures for Introduction to Oceanography (MNS 307). Provides weekly guidance on lab procedures and occasionally attends sessions to monitor, evaluate TAs, and re-direct as necessary.
      • Assembles and arranges laboratory equipment for weekly lab sessions MNS 307 in collaboration with instructor. Works closely with MNS 307/308 instructor to support instructional operations as needed.
      • Collaborates with the Marine Science Institute to coordinate logistics for MNS 120L, and other courses that require travel to Port Aransas.
      • Reviews, innovates, and adjusts established course lab manual, TA and UGTA instructional policies and procedures for MNS 307, MNS 308, MNS 320, MNS 120L and other courses as necessary.
    • Other support
      • Provides mentorship and support to students in both work-related duties and as a general advisor. Connects students with other departmental resources as needed. Assists students with Study Abroad logistics in collaboration with instructors and CNS Experiential Learning. Assists with Marine Science Club. Work with MSI IT to keep distance classroom connected and running properly
      • Assist with script and article coordination for Science and the Sea education initiative. Review, fact-check, and find images for all articles and episodes. Maintain content on the website


    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Science or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university.
    • 1 or more years’ experience working with laboratory equipment.
    • Ability to take initiative and troubleshoot challenges with very little supervision.
    • 1 year of relevant administrative experience.
    • Must have proficiency in computer software applications.
    • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.


    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Science or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university.
    • 2 or more years’ experience working in a university or higher education environment
    • 5 or more years working in an administrative role within a university or higher education environment.


    Driving Required

    This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

    Salary Range

    $45,500 depending on qualifications

    Working Conditions

    • Frequently works in office and laboratory environment.
    • Frequent physical activity including bending, kneeling, twisting, turning, climbing, lifting, carrying, and pushing laboratory equipment in preparing laboratory for course activities. 
    • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach, handle items, and work with fingers.


    Work Shift

    • Monday-Friday
    • Occasional overtime work may be required during peak periods and events.

    Employment Eligibility:

    Retirement Plan Eligibility:

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
