    This position requires excellent writing skills, a basic knowledge of art history and art historical terms, and an in-depth understanding of experiential learning-- an engaged learning process whereby students “learn by doing” and by reflecting on the experience. 

    The job has many moving parts and requires someone who can project manage, capably multi-task, and meet deadlines with quick turnaround times. Successful candidates will be self-directed and flexible. This position requires periodic weekend and evening work.

    Purpose

    The education program coordinator develops and/or manages all educational and public programs for Landmarks, the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin. Using Landmarks’ collection as a teaching tool and overarching framework, the coordinator develops programs with curricular relevance for wide-ranging disciplines across campus, as well as events that engage the larger Austin community. The coordinator also manages Landmarks’ volunteer docent program and student employees who staff the James Turrell Skyspace on campus.

    Responsibilities

    • Tour management: Recruit and train new docents to give tours of the collection and to serve as capable ambassadors for Landmarks. Prepare docent training materials. Assure quality of tour presentations by docents. Plan recruitment events and enhanced learning opportunities. Partner with outside institutions to expand docent training. Implement strategies to encourage growth of docent community. Administering docent surveys to track progress. Promote tours to UT faculty and staff. Respond to tour inquiries from the public and development. Design and lead tours for UT and Austin community. Includes annual bike tour, dog tour, Landmarks at Night, and monthly weekend tours. Assist in the development and coordination of mobile tours.
    • Manage routine administration of James Turrell Skyspace: Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and manage HR for paid student Skyspace attendants. Approve timesheets. Coordinate with Skyspace team to log and record attendance numbers. Manage reservation system and respond to Skyspace inquiries. Coordinate with IT support and Landmarks’ communications team to ensure the Turell website is current and functioning properly. Respond to all emails sent to Landmarks’ reservation email address. Schedule group or classroom tours as appropriate. Ensure Skyspace closures and cancellations (for maintenance or other reasons) are communicated in a timely manner.
    • Oversee the production of educational materials: Identify and manage curatorial contributors/authors for each Landmarks’ project. Oversee and maintain deadlines for the curatorial contributor’s essay, bibliographic highlights, audio guides, and other deliverables. Create activity guides for children. Assist in development of Landmarks handbook.
    • Manage public programs: Plan and coordinate all logistics for public programs. Serve as liaison between Landmarks and representatives from UT college or department or outside organizations. Manage vendor agreements and event logistics as required. Plan and manage volunteers for Explore UT and other campus programs. Liaison with campus and community constituents to collaborate on event development and promotion. Collaborate with colleagues at the Fine Arts Library to recommend acquisitions for books and other materials related to Landmarks’ projects and artists.
    • Intern management: Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and manage interns assigned to the Education Department. Approve bi-monthly timesheets at payroll deadline. Provide mentorship and appropriate assignments to further educational goals. Evaluate performance and provide constructive feedback at regular intervals.
    • Administrative Coordination: Formulate and monitor budgets for all education programs in coordination with Landmarks Business Administrator. Coordinate education related contracts, purchase orders, and invoices. Track tour attendance, event attendance, and volunteer participation. Provide education programming stats for development purposes. Maintain strategic plan, timeline, project checklists, project lists, and dashboard reports in coordination with colleagues.


    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree
    • 3 years’ experience coordinating or administering a program
    • Experience working in arts education
    • Excellent writing and communication skills
    • Ability to project manage, multi-task, and successfully meet deadlines
    • Able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of experiential learning—an engaged learning process whereby students “learn by doing” and by reflecting on the experience
    • Required Competencies: Effective Communications, Initiative, Problem Solving, Decision Making and Critical Thinking, Managing Multiple Priorities, Teamwork, Service Excellence


    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Basic knowledge of art history and contemporary art and artists
    • Three-years’ experience as an educator (or equivalent position) within a cultural organization
    • Bilingual


    Driving Required

    This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

    Salary Range

    $54,000 - $60,000

    Working Conditions

    • Required on campus three days a week, five days a week during new in position period.

    Work Shift

    • Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm, with some evenings and weekends to attend events or programming.

    Employment Eligibility:

    Retirement Plan Eligibility:

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
