Purpose of Position

The Associate Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive athletic training services and medical coverage for assigned sport programs, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care for student-athletes. This position collaborates closely with team physicians, coaches, and sports performance staff to support student-athlete health, safety, and return-to-play decisions while ensuring compliance with NCAA, HIPAA, and departmental standards. The position also assists with supervision and mentorship of athletic training students and contributes to the daily operations of the Sports Medicine unit.

Essential Functions

  • Provide athletic training coverage for assigned sport(s), including practices, strength and conditioning sessions, home events, and travel to away competitions to ensure athlete readiness through consistent presence and sport-specific care.
  • Evaluate and manage athletic injuries and conditions, including immediate care, clinical assessment, therapeutic treatment, and the development and implementation of individualized rehabilitation plans.
  • Design and implement injury prevention and wellness strategies, including pre-participation exams, movement screenings, recovery protocols, and student-athlete education related to hydration, nutrition, and mental health awareness.
  • Communicate and collaborate with team physicians, coaching staff, strength and conditioning personnel, and administrators regarding medical care, participation status, and return-to-play protocols.
  • Provide emergency medical care and implement sport-specific emergency action plans as the primary responder for acute injuries during practices and competitions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation, including injury reports, treatment notes, rehabilitation updates, referrals, and records in compliance with NCAA, HIPAA, and departmental standards.
  • Oversee athletic training students through clinical supervision, instruction, mentorship, and service as a Clinical Preceptor for the Athletic Training Education Program; manage inventory, supplies, equipment, and assist with insurance documentation and departmental compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field with one (1) year of collegiate level athletic training experience.
  • BOC certification and state licensure (or eligibility), State of Texas Licensure Eligible Certified Athletic Trainer, CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Athletic Training or related field with two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with collegiate basketball teams in a NCAA D1 environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Work under the Code of Conduct and bylaws of an Athletic Trainer.
  • Understand the administration and daily operations of an athletic training room.
  • Stay current on continuing education and practices of an Athletic Trainer.
  • Supervision of graduate assistants and athletic training students.

Work Schedule

  • Work involves early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. .
  • Travel with assigned team.

Working Conditions

  • May work in all weather conditions.
  • May work around standard office conditions.
  • Use of manual dexterity.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking required.

Additional Information

  • There are two positions available. Current sport assignments are Men's Basketball and Flag Football; however, these assignments are subject to change based on departmental needs.
