Job Summary

The resident will deliver direct clinical services, psychological assessment, outreach programming, and multidisciplinary consultation within an integrated athletics health model. This position emphasizes the development of advanced competencies in assessment, crisis intervention, sport performance consultation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and systems-level service delivery in compliance with NCAA, conference, and state regulatory standards. This is a supervised, training-focused appointment. Eligibility for licensure in the State of Mississippi is required at the time of hire, with the expectation of obtaining independent licensure within three (3) months of employment.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clinical caseload of enrolled student-athletes, including individual therapy, team interventions, and group programming.
  • Conduct and/or co-supervise psychological evaluations to inform diagnostic clarification, treatment planning, and referrals for psychopharmacological consultation.
  • Complete intellectual and psychoeducational assessments to support accommodation requests in collaboration with Athletic Academic Support Services.
  • Provide evidence-based sport psychology consultation to assigned teams and facilitate psychoeducational workshops grounded in empirically supported sport and performance psychology principles.
  • Assist with providing consultation and outreach services to coaches, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning, nutrition and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being of individual student-athletes and team members.
  • Assist in providing daytime, evening, and weekend crisis response services for individual student-athletes and teams.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support emergency mental health care, reintegration following injury or hospitalization, and continuity of care.
  • Support coordinated care for complex clinical presentations including substance use disorders, disordered eating, and severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Engage in collaborative practice with campus entities including student counseling services, health services, academic support, and behavioral health resources.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation within the electronic medical record system.
  • Assist in compiling and reporting data utilization for psychological services.
  • Participate in supervision and training meetings and perform special projects or departmental initiatives as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an accredited institution. Completion of an APA-accredited internship prior to the start date. Demonstrated clinical experience working with emerging adult populations. Demonstrated competence in the administration and interpretation of psychological assessment instruments, including intellectual (e.g., WAIS), personality (e.g., MMPI, PAI), and psychoeducational (e.g., WJ, WRAT) assessments. Eligibility for provisional or independent licensure in the State of Mississippi, with the expectation of obtaining independent licensure within three (3) months of hire. Demonstrated knowledge of ethical, legal, and professional standards governing the practice of psychology. This position will work non-traditional and irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Eclectic knowledge of theoretical approaches to psychotherapy and clinical/counseling psychology.
  • Knowledge of sport psychology and performance enhancement.
  • Knowledge to ensure all assigned tasks comply with University, Sunbelt Conference, and NCAA rules.
  • Knowledge of professional, legal, ethical, and professional standards endorsed by licensing professional organizations.
  • Competency practicing in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to conceptualize, diagnose and properly treat cognitive, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
  • Ability to make accurate judgments concerning the physical, emotional, and educational welfare of student-athletes.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced training or specialization in Sport Psychology or Performance Psychology.

Experience providing mental health or sport performance services within collegiate or competitive athletic settings.

Experience addressing substance misuse, eating concerns, identity development, injury and return-to-play adjustment, crisis management, anxiety, depression, and grief in athletes.

Familiarity with community-based referral networks.

Ability to present at local, national, and international conferences while adequately representing Southern Miss Athletics.

Certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology or comparable advanced training.

Experience presenting at professional conferences and engaging in scholarly dissemination.
