Assistive Technology Specialist

The University of Kansas
Lawrence, KS Full Time
POSTED ON 1/30/2026 CLOSED ON 2/28/2026

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistive Technology Specialist position at The University of Kansas?

Position Overview

The Research Project Specialist is a unique role that blends direct support for individuals with disabilities with the behind-the-scenes administrative work that keeps Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) programs running across the state. At its core, the position is about helping people in the Northeast Region gain access to assistive technology that can make a real difference in their daily lives—whether that means improving communication, supporting independence at home, or creating opportunities for education and employment.

Much of the work involves connecting people to the right tools and resources. This could be demonstrating how a device works, lending equipment for someone to try, or helping them find funding to purchase the technology they need. The role also supports the Telecommunications Access Program by guiding people through applications, showing them how to use approved devices, and following up to ensure the technology is meeting their needs.

Equally important is the administrative side of the job, which keeps everything running smoothly. The Specialist helps manage purchasing and payments, organizes office supplies and equipment, and keeps accurate records for statewide programs. These behind-the-scenes efforts are what allow ATK to deliver services effectively to people across Kansas.

Success in this role takes strong organization, attention to detail, and clear communication—but just as importantly, it requires a collaborative mindset and a genuine commitment to promoting independence and inclusion through assistive technology.
