Physician Assistant- Pediatric Oncology, Stem Cell Transplant, and Cellular Therapies

Within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, this position works in collaboration with the attending physicians and will work within their scope of practice to provide excellent clinical care for patients with cancer and recipients of Bone Marrow Transplantation and cellular therapies within the Division Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation/Oncology.  In accordance with scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, regulations, institutional policies and practice agreements, the position will conduct comprehensive health history and physical assessments, establish medical diagnoses, order and evaluates diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plans.  

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Functions independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to evaluate, plan and deliver care to patients. 
    Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.
  • In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
    Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic oncological conditions.
  • Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Required to become competent in ordering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy including the management of side effects.
  • Opportunity to complete a specific clinical training in lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations. After completion, additional privileges would be obtained. 
  • Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
  • Facilitates the patient’s transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Participates in departmental educational conferences and clinical care meetings. Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other records for compliance, billing, and other regulatory

Education Requirement: 

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which includes graduation from an accredited PA education program and/or certification by the NCCPA.Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which includes graduation from an accredited PA education program and/or certification by the NCCPA
  • Eligibility to obtain or current certification as Physician Assistant (PA).
  • Eligibility to obtain or Licensure as Physician Assistant in State of Iowa. 
     

Experience Requirement: 

  • Demonstrated experience in the clinical care of pediatric patients. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with indirect supervision and critical thinking/problem solving skills. 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Eligible for or possessing a federal DEA license. 
     

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience of one to three years in the care of pediatric patients or experience that demonstrates knowledge in the care of pediatric patients. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing clinical care in pediatric oncology/BMT.
  • Previous professional experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in pediatrics.
  • Previous professional experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in oncology/BMT.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in ambulatory care. 
  • PALS/ACLS
