Position Summary
The University Club of MSU is seeking a Chief Building Engineer to lead the physical operations of our high-end hospitality ecosystem. This is a "Player-Coach" role for a professional who can navigate a 100,000 sq. ft. private club and conference center campus, manage building systems through vendor specialists, and personally troubleshoot a commercial oven or a treadmill with equal ease. Schedule -- Primarily Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings or weekends for major special events and on-call availability for emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
- The "Player-Coach" Balance: Perform hands-on light repairs and troubleshooting for small equipment (vacuums, gym equipment, kitchen fixtures) while maintaining the technical literacy to manage high-level building systems.
- Vendor Strategy: Act as the primary point of contact for specialized contractors (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Commercial Kitchen Equipment, and Refrigeration). You’ll decide when to use a wrench and when to call the specialist.
- Asset Stewardship: Execute leading-edge Preventive Maintenance (PM) program and manage the long-term Capital Improvement Plan.
- Hospitality Leadership: Work closely with the General Manager and department heads to ensure the infrastructure for our facilities & services operate at a "private-club-caliber" level.
- Compliance: Ensure the property is fully compliant with Michigan state and local safety regulations (Boiler, Fire, MDHHS Pool, etc.).
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 5–8 years in building operations and maintenance, ideally in a resort, hotel, or high-end commercial setting.
- Technical Versatility: Advanced knowledge in at least three areas: HVAC, refrigeration, building automation, single or 3-phase electrical, commercial plumbing, or aquatic systems.
- Communication: Ability to translate complex technical issues to non-technical others (and vice versa) with a service-first attitude.
- Education: High School Diploma/GED required; Trade school, relevant certifications, or a related Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to navigate a 100,000 sq. ft. campus multiple times per shift
- Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs independently and 100 lbs with assistance
- Comfortable working in tight spaces, on ladders, and in varying outdoor seasonal conditions

Pay: $70,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
