This is a 20hr/week position with pay of $30-35K per year depending on experience and qualifications.
Overall Description
In obedience to God’s call and the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Pastor and the Director of Traditional Music and Organist, the Traditional Music Associate and Assistant Organist is responsible will actively participate in the Music Ministry of West Market Street United Methodist Church by playing regularly for Sunday morning services and will play a vital role in the growth of the Music Ministry by aiding with the leadership, administration, and creation of ensembles in the church.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Accompanying weekly rehearsals of the Chancel Choir (mid-August-June).
- Currently Wednesday evenings 7:00pm-8:15pm. Approximately 2 hours per week.
- Accompanying the Chancel Choir, Children’s Choirs and other ensembles as needed in worship services and special services throughout the year.
- Preparing additional portions of the music for worship services and dividing parts of the service with the Director of Traditional Music and Organist.
- Substituting for the Director of Traditional Music and Organist when needed.
- Aiding in the weekly preparation of music portions for the printed bulletin, including OneLicense.net and other copyright permissions.
- Aiding with the maintenance of the Music Library and working with the volunteer Music Librarians.
- Aiding with advertising and implementation of concerts and special music events at the church.
- Directing and leading one of the current ensembles in the church, either the MarketBell Ringers or the Children’s Choir, with the understanding that additional ensembles will grow from current offerings in coordination with the Traditional Music Director.
MarketBell Ringers (adult handbells) currently meets on Mondays 6:00pm-7:00pm. Approximately 2-3 hours per week for recruitment, preparation and rehearsal; additional requirements for this ensemble would include: arranging music as needed, arranging for workshops for those interested in handbells. There is great potential for growth with handbells at the church: beginning and more advanced groups, children’s handbells, youth handbells.
Children’s Choir (for grades K-5) currently meets on Sunday evenings from 5-5:45pm. Approximately 2-3 hours per week for recruitment, preparation and rehearsal; additional requirement for this ensemble would include: arranging music as needed. There is great potential for growth in music at the church for Children and Youth: a preschool choir, a youth ensemble, etc.
- Participating in weekly meetings with the Director of Traditional Music and Organist to plan and vision for upcoming programs and events.
- approximately 2 hours per week.
- Participate in rehearsals and set aside time for preparation for accompanying and playing services.
- Weddings and Funerals will be split with the Director of Traditional Music and Organist.
Additional fees are paid.
Educational, Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Exceptional organizational, time management skills and interpersonal skills.
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music is required, with a high skill level at piano and organ. If more skilled at piano, this individual would need to be willing to grow skills at organ.
- Experience in accompanying and leading ensembles.
- A knowledge of sacred music: hymnody, choral anthems, keyboard repertoire (piano/organ/harpsichord).
- Commitment to the mission, vision and values of West Market Street United Methodist Church.
- Appreciation of the role and purpose of the church in Christian ministry to the local community and globally.
- Commitment to personal and spiritual disciplines and a willingness to pray for one another on the staff and in the shared life and ministry of West Market Street United Methodist Church.
Employment Status: Part time 20 hours/week
Set times:
- Sundays 8:30am to 12:30pm.
- Wednesday evenings 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
- Leadership of ensemble(s) in the church, as set for each group.
- A weekly meeting as set with the Director of Traditional Music.
- 4 Sundays off per year and up to 20 hours of paid time off each quarter for flex time.
The Music Associate and Assistant Organist will exhibit a high level of professionalism.
