Community Outreach Coordinator
St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church – Bowie, Maryland
Position Overview
The Community Outreach Coordinator helps build meaningful connections between St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church and the wider Bowie community. This position provides collaborative leadership focused on strengthening relationships, creating welcoming entry points into church life, and supporting outreach efforts that serve and engage people across diverse backgrounds. Working closely with staff and volunteers, the coordinator helps ensure that St. Matthew’s is visible, accessible, and responsive to the community's needs and opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement
- Build relationships between St. Matthew’s and local community organizations, schools, universities, houses of worship, and service groups.
- Help create welcoming opportunities for community members to engage with the church through events, service projects, and partnerships.
- Support collaboration with local interfaith partners and community organizations.
Outreach & Programs
- Coordinate and support community-facing events, outreach activities, and mission opportunities.
- Work with ministry leaders and volunteers to strengthen participation in outreach initiatives.
- Help grow St. Matthew’s local, regional, and global mission engagement.
Communication & Visibility
- Promote outreach initiatives through the church website, social media, and other communications outlets, such as local media.
- Support efforts by all church groups to use these tools to share the church’s story of service and community engagement.
- Help ensure that St. Matthew’s ministries are visible and accessible to the wider community.
Staff Collaboration
- Serve as a collaborative member of the church staff team.
- Assist with church-wide initiatives and outreach-related projects as assigned by the Senior Pastor.
Position Requirements
Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in community engagement, relationship-building, and collaborative leadership.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience in community outreach, nonprofit work, ministry, communications, or community organizing
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate with volunteers and diverse groups
- Initiative, creativity, and organizational skills
- Familiarity with social media and digital communication tools
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, church management software, web configuration/maintenance, and related applications
A bachelor’s degree in a related field is helpful but not required. Relevant experience, leadership, or community involvement may substitute.
This is a paid staff position primarily funded by a three-year grant. It requires evening and weekend participation to support church events and community activities. The salary is $55,000, commensurate with experience, reviewed annually.Benefits include standard church benefits such as: paid holidays, annual and sick leave, medical insurance, and pension contribution.
