Basic Job Function:
To help the overall day to day operation and long term outlook of the restaurant; to Greet, and interact with each guest in a kind, collected, and positive manor, while having a clear understanding and interest in the dishes and beverages served to the guests.
Job Description:
Main duty is to provide polite, professional, fast, and courteous service. The level of professionalism expected is high. As a host, you must be prepared, and keep your composure, for the unexpected. You must be polite and positive at all times. You must be accommodating to all guests. You must remain calm and sympathetic to guests regardless of the situation. You must accurately communicate with all staff members any upcoming reservations or potential guests. You are expected to assist wherever necessary, which is not limited to bussing tables, delivering drinks, resetting tables, etc. All of these and more define our teamwork and attitude. Your positive attitude and how you fit into our team is essential. With that in mind the restaurant is your house and the guests are your guests. Treat them with respect, and you will receive the same in return. While the responsibility of assuring great service to the entire restaurant is big, with teamwork it becomes easy and flowing.
Position Purpose:
To help the overall day to day operation and long term outlook of the restaurant; to greet/interact with guests positively and consistently with a smile; to assist in any necessary tasks throughout the Food & Beverage Department; to have a clear understanding and interest in the dishes and beverages served to our guests. To run food and beverage items whenever necessary and to maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of Herons restaurant.
Part Time Hours 20-28 hours a week
Qualifications
This is for a part-time (about 30 hours) host position for dinner service only.
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule in order to accomplish all major responsibilities and tasks.
- Must be a self-motivator and motivator of others.
- Must work in a safe, prudent and organized manner.
- Must have a good knowledge of food and preparation.
- Must have or quickly acquire a good knowledge of wine.
- Must be able to relate to all levels of guests and management.
- Must have a minimum of 1 year experience in a similar position.
- Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.
- Must be able to consistently delight and satisfy our guest.
Physical Requirements:
- Most work tasks are performed indoors though there will be also be restaurant seating as well as cocktail tables outdoors on the terrace.
- May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including excessive heat and cold.
- Physical ability to walk and handle trays, food items, glasses, etc. in a safe and constructive manner for at least 4 hours at a time.
- Must be able to exert well-paced ability in limited space and to reach other locations of the hotel on a timely basis.
- Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks occasionally.
- Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and subordinates.
- Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near and color vision and depth perception.
- Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
- Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.
- Ability to use OpenTable computer systems and Microsoft Word.
Education:
High school or equivalent education required
Experience:
Host experience required; hospitality experience preferred
Licenses or Certificates:
Ability to obtain and/or maintain any government required licenses, certificates or permits.
Grooming:
All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per The Umstead Hotel standards.
