Under general supervision, this position is responsible for direct and constant pool surveillance, provides emergency response to drowning and medical events, enforces all safety rules and regulations, and ensures a safe and fun swimming environment for all patrons.

*This position performs duties deemed to be safety sensitive. Employees holding this position participate in pre- employment and random drug testing under Town’s policies*

  • Provides direct, constant and uninterrupted swimming pool and patron surveillance to the assigned zone of coverage.
  • Recognizes, responds to and provides necessary emergency care within limits of training and the Facility Emergency Action Plan (FEAP) to persons in distress, in the pool and facility. This includes administering CPR, emergency oxygen and the use of an AED to protect and/or preserve life.
  • Enforces facility rules, regulations and the patron code of conduct in a calm and professional manner.
  • Participates in a minimum of four (4) hours of continuing education/in-service training each month.
  • Reports all rescues, accidents, incidents to the Manager on Duty as soon as possible; completes accurate reports in a timely manner.
  • Performs daily safety inspections of pool facilities to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for patrons.
  • Performs shift-based cleaning and basic maintenance of pool facilities.
  • Participates in a variety of drills and audits to ensure compliance with Facility and Starguard Elite standards.
  • Utilizes effective written and verbal communication techniques to communicate with Town of Parker staff, management, and the public in a positive and professional manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, certification and/or licensure required. An equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential duties and meet the necessary employment standards may be considered.


Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age. Requires the ability to swim and effectively complete a variety of in-water maneuvers during a pre-employment screening.

Possession of or the ability to obtain a Starguard Elite Lifeguarding Certification, or equivalent lifeguarding certification, Basic Life Support and First Aid Certification, or an equivalent in-house course within thirty (30) days of hire.

Employment Standards

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Knowledge of relevant town, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies.

  • Knowledge of pool and facility rules, regulations and best practices.

  • Knowledge of commercial pool operations.

  • Knowledge of basic life support and first aid techniques.

  • Skill in the use and ability to operate lifesaving equipment and pool rescue equipment.

  • Skill in the use verbal communication to advise of safety risks and rules.

  • Skill in basic swimming and the ability to pass regular physical testing requirements.

  • Skill in conflict management.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with patrons and co-workers.

  • Ability to handle incidents and confrontations in a recreation facility.

  • Ability to provide a positive customer service attitude towards all patrons.

  • Ability to work as a team and respond to emergency situations.

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background and drug screen.

Requires frequent use of emergency, lifesaving equipment and basic pool cleaning/maintenance tools and equipment.


Physical Demands

Requires frequent swimming, standing, walking, sitting, talking, handling, feeling or operating objects, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Requires reaching with hands and arms, climbing and balancing. Requires moderate to vigorous physical activity with heavy lifting, up to one hundred (100) pounds, including the pulling or lifting of a limp body. Requires close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus, allowing a broad field of vision.


Every employee in this position should assume that strenuous physical activity in saving a patron’s life may be required.

 

Environment

Work is frequently performed at an indoor or outdoor pool with exposure to high levels of humidity and the varying temperatures. The noise level is usually high and may range from moderate to extreme. The employee may occasionally work with or around hazardous items or hazardous conditions such as mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, chemicals, or radiant energy.
