GENERAL PURPOSE: Labor 1 is an entry-level, non-skilled position assisting in the maintenance of Town-owned utilities, streets, facilities, and vehicles. Assignments are received in the form of oral instruction or work orders and rough notes. Work is reviewed for quality and timeliness.  The Labor 1 position reports directly to the Street Superintendent and the Street Foreman.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Class B CDL preferred; or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Engage in a wide variety of tasks, such as assisting in the maintenance and repair of streets and sidewalks, and grounds maintenance.
• Assist in snow removal, which includes the ability to operate a snow plow.
• Participate in the town-wide Fall Leaf Pick-Up program.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.
• Must work cooperatively on a work crew and also have the ability to work independently.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
• Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and within one-half hour when on call.

• Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to pass a background check and a drug screening.

• Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment.
• Properly climb a ladder and work from heights to trim trees.
• Must be able to reach overhead, above the shoulder, and horizontally.
• Standing for extended periods of time.
• Bending at the waist.
• Lifting and carrying heavy objects - 50 lbs. minimum or lifting 25 lbs. overhead.
• Heavy physical labor.
• Carrying; pushing or pulling; kneeling or crouching.
