SHIFT LEAD
The Toasted Cone — West Des Moines, Iowa
The Toasted Cone is looking for a dependable, friendly, and hands-on Shift Lead to help run daily store operations. This person will lead by example, support and train employees, maintain our quality standards, and ensure every customer receives welcoming and efficient service.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the team during assigned shifts and help employees stay organized and productive.
- Welcome customers, offer samples, answer product questions, and provide excellent customer service.
- Scoop and serve ice cream, prepare milkshakes, sundaes, and other menu items.
- Make fresh waffle cones and waffle bowls according to store standards.
- Serve and package bakery items accurately and neatly.
- Fill, label, date, and organize ice cream pints.
- Assist with making cookies, brownies, and other bakery products as needed.
- Complete and verify all opening and closing duties.
- Make sure equipment, supplies, toppings, cones, cups, and products are stocked and in their proper places.
- Train new employees on customer service, food preparation, cleaning, safety, and store procedures.
- Assign cleaning and preparation tasks and follow up to ensure they are completed correctly.
- Maintain a clean and organized serving area, kitchen, dining room, restrooms, storage areas, and outdoor seating area.
- Monitor product freshness and rotate products using FIFO procedures.
- Check inventory levels and notify management when products or supplies need to be ordered.
- Handle customer transactions accurately and maintain the correct cash drawer balance.
- Follow food-safety, sanitation, allergen-awareness, and health guidelines.
- Address customer concerns professionally and notify management when additional support is needed.
- Communicate store, staffing, inventory, or equipment concerns to management promptly.
- Help create a positive, respectful, and team-oriented workplace.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Previous food-service, retail, or customer-service experience is preferred.
- Previous leadership or training experience is a plus.
- Dependable, punctual, organized, and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Friendly and confident when communicating with customers and employees.
- Able to work efficiently during busy periods while maintaining quality and accuracy.
- Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Willing to obtain required food-safety certification, if applicable.
- Able to stand for extended periods, bend and reach into ice cream cabinets, and occasionally lift or move supplies weighing up to 40–50 pounds.
