Engineering Staff Mechanic
Job Description:
The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point is currently seeking a skilled Hotel Maintenance Mechanic to join our Engineering Team. This position requires a strong background in plumbing and electrical systems, with a hands-on approach to maintaining and repairing hotel rooms, equipment, and infrastructure. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver who takes pride in delivering safe, high-quality work to support the guest’s experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strong Plumbing background is a MUST
- Conduct routine and preventive inspections of guest rooms and common areas to identify and resolve maintenance needs
- Install, repair, and maintain electrical systems including light fixtures, outlets, switches, breakers, GFCI outlets, and circuit panels
- Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues ensuring compliance with safety codes and hotel standards
- Perform comprehensive plumbing work including pipe repairs/replacement, leak remediation, fixture installation, and unclogging of drains using handheld and powered snakes
- Install or repair drywall, patch and prep surfaces, and perform interior painting
- Provide basic HVAC and refrigeration support, including filter replacements, thermostat checks, and coil cleaning
- Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on commercial laundry equipment
- Assist with basic TV and technology setup or troubleshooting in guest rooms
- Operate snowplow and related snow removal equipment as needed during winter season
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all MDS and OSHA safety guidelines
- Candidates must possess their own basic tools; while the company provides standard equipment and job-specific supplies, all engineers are expected to maintain a personal set of essential tools required for daily work including power tools.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and ensure timely follow-through for guest and team satisfaction
- Support other departments as needed and perform additional duties assigned by management
- Proactively mentor and train less experienced engineers during downtime, taking initiative to provide guidance when skill gaps or development needs are observed.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience in plumbing and electrical systems is a must — this includes installations, troubleshooting, and code compliance
- General knowledge of carpentry, HVAC, and appliance repair
- Understanding of local, state, and federal building and safety codes
- Availability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Valid NYS driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to pass background check and drug screening
- Reliable transportation and ability to report to work on time
- Ability to work independently with a team-oriented attitude
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs
- Comfortable using hand and power tools, ladders, and heavy equipment
