Job Summary
The Texas Zoo is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a Zoo Educator. This unique position combines public education and animal husbandry, giving the right candidate the opportunity to work closely with both people and animals.
As a Zoo Educator, you will inspire guests through engaging programs, outreach events, and animal encounters while caring for our education animal collection.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years or older.
- Previous experience in interpretation, environmental education, and/or public speaking is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask, adapt to change, and prioritize effectively.
- Capable of strictly following policies and procedures and of learning species and resident animal information
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Understanding of natural science themes, nature-play, and animal behavior.
- Physically capable of doing habitat maintenance and able to lift 50 pounds.
- Domestic and/or exotic animal experience is a plus.
Education duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide daily scripted animal encounters and educational programs for scheduled groups, parties, field trips, and events.
- Represent The Texas Zoo at off-site programs (libraries, schools, special events, etc.).
- Manage the education run, including husbandry, feeding, and enrichment of the education program animals and working with the other educators.
- Care for and handle a wide variety of education animals used in programs.
- Assist with guided tours, respond to guest questions, and correct unsafe behavior when necessary.
- Deliver outstanding customer service to patrons, stakeholders, and the community.
General Expectations:
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and management, while also demonstrating strong independent work skills.
- Maintain flexibility to work weekends, holidays, evenings, emergencies, and special events.
- Exercise strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and a team-oriented attitude.
Responsibilities:
- 55%- Zoo Education Program Facilitation
- 20%- Animal care, including feeding, cleaning, and habitat maintenance
- 15%- Program Planning and Preparation, event planning, meetings, and trainings.
- 10%- Other duties as assigned
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $10.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 32 per week
