Disability Coordinator is primarily responsible for the administration, supervision and coordination of all areas of Disability Services. Additionally, ensures that all related Head Start Performances Standards and Agency policies and procedures are properly implemented and maintained.

- Responsible for ensuring that at least ten percent of enrollment opportunities are available to children with disabilities.
- Plans the Disabilities component programs with a team of staff, parent and other component specialists and supervises the implementation of the planned activities.
- General Classroom/Visit Observations & Coaching
- Visit each location (center) at least once per month.
- Provide child development information related to disability or special needs.
- Provide guidance and model developmentally appropriate activities for children and effective ways to work with and support young children.
- Provide written and oral observations and strengths-based feedback to staff on an annual basis.
- Meet with teams to review observations and develop and implement plans as needed.
- Ensures that the programs services to children with disabilities and their families are well coordinated with community partners, particularly the local education agencies (LEA’s) and Part C agencies responsible for implementing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Develops a list of local disabilities resources, establishing and maintaining relationships with those partners and contractual agreements as appropriate.
- Organizes and coordinates system that ensures the need for early intervention, special education and for related services are identified promptly and in coordination with partner agencies.
- Coordinates with team, including staff and parents in developing an Individual Learning Plan using the child’s goals from disability documentation for each child with a disability.
- Ensures that parents of children with disabilities are supported and involved as decision makers and receive assistance in understanding and advocating for services and support needed to address their child’s special needs.
- Ensures that children receive appropriate and timely screening to identify and address any behavior, social or emotional concerns.
- Implements practice that ensures parents are involved in planning and participating in recommendations for the mental health needs of their children and offered individual and group opportunity for counseling, education and training.
- Coordinates with all divisions including Education, Health, Nutrition, Parent Involvement and Family Services.
- Oversees maintenance of individual disabilities records to ensure that they are complete and current and ensures confidentiality of records.
- Implements a system of continuous monitoring, supervision, training and ongoing evaluations of disabilities service area.
- Disability Coordinator with collaborate with LEA’s regarding referrals, evaluations, and ARD Meetings to ensure children are receiving services in a timely manner.
- Plans and arranges for staff training and guidance regarding disabilities services education.
- Conducts on-site visits for the purposes of observation and staff support.
- Maintains good attendance and punctuality and must notify supervisor in advance of any absences or tardiness.
- In addition to other duties, anyone working in a center has the primary responsibility for the health and safety of the children.
- Required to report suspected child abuse to the appropriate agency within 48 hours after the abuse is first suspected. Appropriate agency is defined as follows by the Texas Family Code: 1) any local or state law enforcement agency; 2) the department if the alleged or suspected abuse involves a person responsible for the care, custody, or welfare of a child; 3) the state agency that operates, licenses, certifies, or registers the facility in which the alleged abuse or neglect occurred; 4) the agency designated by the court to be responsible for the protection of children.

Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Special Education, Child Development, Early Childhood or a related field
- Previous Head Start experience
- Five years or more experience teaching in early childhood classrooms
- Five years or more supervisory or management experience.
- Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish
- Knowledgeable of bilingual education theory and strategies for working with children ages 0-5.
- Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, or Child Development.
- Two years’ experience working with children and families
- Three years’ experience teaching children 0-5 and two years of supervisory or mentoring experience.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field with course work or certification in Special Education.
- Two years of teaching 0-5-year-old children with five years of supervisory or management experience.
- Be able to lift 25 30 lbs.
- Be able to walk, squat/kneel, sit on the floor, see, hear and speak with children to ensure children's health and safety.
- At least 21 years old.
- Documentation of Tuberculin Free Condition.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License - Class C
- Daily access to transportation.
- Vehicle insurance (personal injury and liability).
- Word processing and data management skills.
- Initial Health Exam required for all Head Start staff at the employee's expense
- Initial and annual TB screening is required for all Head Start staff at the agency's expense.
- Criminal Background Check required for all Head Start staff at the agency's expense.
- Fingerprinting required for all Head Start staff at the employee's expense.
