ON TIME comes to The Tank in New York City this December for four fully staged performances as we take the next major step in the life of this award-winning new play.
SYNOPSIS: In this gay epic spanning 160 years, ON TIME follows two actors as they portray ten different characters, weaving together moments of love, heartbreak, and survival across centuries. Through a series of intimate encounters–some fleeting, some life-altering–the play explores how time bends, repeats, and reshapes the course of human lives. From the clandestine desires of two coworkers in Victorian England to the modern-day uncertainty of fiancés on the brink of matrimony in the American South, love, loss, and fate intertwine in this sweeping, intimate exploration of human connection - illuminating the barriers history has long placed on queer love.
CONTENT NOTE: This play includes romantic and physical intimacy between the performers, including a kiss and simulated masturbation; intimacy direction will be coordinated.
TRACK 1: EZEKIEL / ANDREI / OTTO / STEVEN / MARK
He/him, 30s. A highly versatile actor with strong dramatic and comedic instincts, able to distinguish five men across 160 years while maintaining an underlying emotional continuity. Requires vulnerability, romantic chemistry, wit, and significant emotional range.
EZEKIEL — 1864, London: Earnest, intelligent, socially awkward and deeply romantic; a working-class telegraph operator experiencing intimacy with another man for the first time. Carries both boyish excitement and deeply ingrained fear and shame.
ANDREI — 1904, Moscow: The privileged son of a diplomat, sophisticated and guarded. Deeply in love with Dmitry but constrained by class, family expectation, and fear; romantic beneath a carefully controlled exterior.
OTTO — 1944, Berlin: A flamboyant nightclub performer—funny, charismatic, theatrical and defiantly himself. Uses humor and glamour to confront terror; beneath the bravado is profound tenderness and an awareness of the danger surrounding him.
STEVEN — 1984, New York City: Energetic, verbose, funny and unabashedly romantic. A hopeful idealist living through the AIDS crisis who believes fiercely in love and commitment; emotionally open, passionate and deeply protective.
MARK — 2024, Mobile: Charming, restless and deeply conflicted. A groom confronting his doubts about marriage—and the choices that brought him to this moment—minutes before his wedding. Requires an actor capable of making damaging behavior human without excusing it.
TRACK 2: MADISON / DMITRY / GEORG / ROB / EVAN
He/him, 30s. A versatile actor with warmth, humor and emotional immediacy, capable of moving between confidence, romantic openness, heartbreak and rage across five distinct men and periods.
MADISON — 1864, London: Confident, playful and more sexually experienced than Ezekiel. A married father and telegraph operator whose teasing exterior gives way to genuine tenderness; comfortable taking the emotional lead.
DMITRY — 1904, Moscow: A valet and aspiring poet; intelligent, sensitive, proud and deeply devoted. More emotionally courageous than Andrei and unwilling to diminish the reality of their relationship despite the class divide between them.
GEORG — 1944, Berlin: Grounded, masculine and practical, but enormously tender. Desperate to save the man he loves and stubbornly hopeful about the future; his strength ultimately lies in choosing love despite terror.
ROB — 1984, New York City: Witty, irreverent and pragmatic, with an independent streak that contrasts Steven’s romantic idealism. Quick with a joke but carrying real fear beneath the surface; playful, sexy and ultimately deeply vulnerable.
EVAN — 2024, Mobile: Openhearted, exuberant and completely committed to the man he is about to marry. His joy gives way to shock, fury and profound heartbreak as the relationship unravels; requires tremendous emotional availability without losing his humor or dignity.
