Job Title: Group Leader (BSP)
Department: Programs (ELO-P) 
Reports To: Program Coordinator 
Location: Sacramento, CA
Classification: Part-Time,  Nonexempt 
Duration: School Year (July – June) 
Salary Range:$23.00 – $25.00/hour 
Schedule: Monday–Friday, Mornings (hours vary by site), subject to change during summer and intersession based on program needs. 

Position Summary

The Before School Program Group Lead, reporting to the Program Coordinator, plays a vital role in creating and maintaining a safe, engaging, and enriching environment for students within Expanded Learning Opportunity Programs (ELO-P). Group Leads are responsible for leading small groups through recreational and educational activities that support academic growth, promote self-esteem, and align with ASES Grant requirements. They are expected to meet all qualifications outlined by district partners, grant guidelines, the California Quality Standards, and TCF expectations. 

Essential Functions  

Supervision and Safety  

  • Supervise up to 20 students during program hours, ensuring their safety and well-being, as assigned by the Site Supervisor. 
  • Enforce program rules and policies to maintain a safe and orderly environment. 
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies or incidents and participate in monthly emergency drills. 
  • Immediately report any suspected child abuse to the Site Supervisor and follow mandated reporting procedures. 

Activity Planning and Implementation  

  • Manage breakfast for students
  • Take attendance and conduct various activities
  • Assist with yard duty/morning walk
  • Lesson plan and organize age-appropriate activities and projects to engage students in constructive and educational pursuits.  
  • Lead and participate in group activities such as arts and crafts, sports, academic enrichment, and recreational games.  
  • Incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) concepts into activities to promote holistic learning.  
  • Maintain a clean and organized program space by participating in daily cleanup and general maintenance routines.  

Academic Support  

  • Provide homework assistance and academic support to students as needed.  
  • Collaborate with school staff to align ELO-P activities with classroom learning objectives.  
  • Monitor students' progress and provide feedback to help them achieve academic goals.  

Behavior Management  

  • Set clear expectations for behavior and conduct within the program, promoting a positive and respectful atmosphere.  
  • Implement appropriate disciplinary measures, when necessary, in accordance with program guidelines and protocols, and promptly communicate any behavioral concerns or students requiring additional support to the Site Supervisor. 
  • Foster a culture of inclusivity and diversity, promoting acceptance and understanding among students.  
  • Maintain a professional tone and use encouraging, constructive language when interacting with staff and students. 

Professional Communication and Team Engagement 

  • Greet parents professionally using verbal acknowledgment and eye contact; promptly relay all parent communication to the Site Supervisor. 
  • Maintain clear and respectful communication with students, parents, school personnel, and program administrators. 
  • Collaborate with team members to support the development and implementation of program goals, strategies, and initiatives. 
  • Actively participate in BSP staff meetings, training sessions, and required professional development opportunities. 

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support evolving organizational needs. 

Job Qualifications  

Minimum Qualifications  

  • At least 18 years of age 
  • 48 college semester units or passing score on the Paraeducator exam 
  • Valid TB clearance 
  • DOJ/FBI background clearance 
  • Reliable, punctual, and dependable 
  • Experience working with youth and basic knowledge of elementary subjects 
  • Strong classroom and behavior management skills 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively 
  • Effective, professional communication with staff, students, families, and partners 

Certifications & Clearances 

  • Required: Sexual Harassment Prevention Training and Mandated Reporter Training 
  • Preferred: First Aid and CPR Certification 

Physical Demands 

  • Must have the strength, agility, and mobility to actively supervise children and perform program duties 
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and other physical movement required 
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25lbs safely 

Work Environment & Travel 

  • Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions 
  • May be assigned to multiple site locations 
  • Reliable transportation required 
  • Must follow all current CDC and local health guidelines for a safe work environment 

Technology & Tools (Preferred) 

  • EZReports, Procare, or similar systems (as required by district) 
  • Microsoft Office 365 (Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Forms, Outlook) 
  • Workforce platforms such as ADP and Deputy
