Job Purpose

This part-time, temporary role is essential to maintaining the continuity and excellence of Summit School’s learning environment. Substitute teachers are expected to step in seamlessly, leading classrooms with preparedness, professionalism, and care when the regular teacher is unavailable. You will work closely with grade-level and department teams, ensuring that the learning experience remains engaging, collaborative, and consistent with the school’s mission.

Primary Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Division Directors, grade-level teams, and department colleagues to execute pre-planned lessons and activities.
• Implement provided lesson plans accurately and effectively, ensuring a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students.
• Deliver instruction in a clear and engaging manner, adapting teaching methods to meet the diverse learning needs of individual students.
• Provide clear explanations and instructions, fostering student understanding and participation.
• Effectively manage student behavior, minimizing distractions and promoting active engagement.
• Maintain a positive, safe, and structured learning environment for all students.
• Distribute and explain in-class and at-home assignments based on provided lesson plans.
• Monitor student progress and provide feedback as needed.
• For long-term substitute positions, develop and implement lesson plans and assignments that align with the curriculum and the regular teacher's established scope and sequence.
• Follow the school’s established curriculum and adhere to lesson plans as provided.
• Supervise students in various settings, including classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and dining areas, ensuring their safety and well-being.
• Take on non-instructional duties as assigned, such as lunch supervision or carpool assistance.
• Provide clear and concise written or verbal feedback to the regular teacher regarding student progress and classroom activities.
• Demonstrate professionalism and uphold the expectations.
• Model respectful, responsible, and positive behavior that reflects the values of Summit School to students, staff, and families.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills

• A passion for teaching and working with students of varying ages.
• Strong classroom management skills and the ability to quickly build rapport with students.
• Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively with diverse age groups and subjects.
• Previous teaching experience is preferred, but not required.

• Bachelor’s degree in education or a related academic field preferred
• Classroom experience preferred
