What are the responsibilities and job description for the Barback position at The Stagecoach Inn?
BARBACK
The Cronin & 101 Club | Marshall, Michigan
Meat Beer Whiskey & Hospitality
The Cronin & 101 Club is looking for hardworking, organized, energetic, and dependable Barbacks to join our opening team.
Our Barbacks are the engine behind the bar.
While our guests may not always see everything happening behind the scenes, a successful bar depends on a Barback who anticipates what the Bartenders need before they have to ask for it.
This is a fast-paced and physically demanding position that requires urgency, attention to detail, organization, teamwork, and the ability to safely move products and supplies throughout a multi-level building.
If the Bartender has to stop making drinks because they're looking for something, we're already behind.
THE ROLE
Barbacks work directly with our Bartenders and Management team to keep the bar stocked, clean, organized, sanitized, and prepared for service.
This role also supports the overall restaurant by running food and beverages, preparing seasonal garnishes, restocking products, maintaining glassware, and assisting wherever needed.
Responsibilities include:
- Keep Bartenders continuously stocked with the products and supplies necessary for service.
- Restock liquor, beer, wine, mixers, juices, syrups, glassware, ice, garnishes, napkins, straws, and other bar supplies.
- Retrieve products from storage areas throughout the building.
- Safely carry cases, kegs when appropriate, ice, supplies, and other restaurant products.
- Travel up and down flights of stairs multiple times throughout each shift.
- Run food promptly and accurately when needed.
- Run beverages from the bar to appropriate tables and service areas.
- Maintain clean and properly stocked glassware.
- Remove dirty glassware and dishes from bar areas.
- Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary bar workstations.
- Empty trash and recycling and replace liners as needed.
- Maintain ice wells and other bar service areas according to sanitation standards.
- Assist Bartenders with opening, running, and closing responsibilities.
- Immediately communicate product shortages, equipment concerns, spills, breakage, or safety issues.
- Support the entire Front of House team when business needs require it.
THIS IS A PHYSICAL POSITION
We want applicants to understand the expectations of this position before joining our team.
Barbacks must be capable of:
- Safely lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Carrying products and supplies for reasonable distances.
- Walking up and down flights of stairs repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying.
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Working quickly in confined bar and service areas.
- Safely handling cases of beverages, ice, glassware, and restaurant supplies.
- Performing physical responsibilities repeatedly throughout a busy shift.
Safe lifting and proper handling procedures must always be followed.
Urgency never comes before safety.
STAY ONE STEP AHEAD
A great Barback doesn't wait until the Bartender says:
"We're out of ice."
They already saw the ice getting low.
They don't wait until the last clean rocks glass disappears.
They've already replenished the glassware.
They don't wait until a bottle is empty during the middle of a rush.
They've been watching inventory throughout service.
The strongest Barbacks develop the ability to anticipate what the bar will need next.
See it. Stock it. Clean it. Keep moving.
SEASONAL GARNISH PREPARATION
Our cocktail program is an important part of The Cronin & 101 Club experience.
Our Barbacks will help Bartenders prepare the fresh and seasonal garnishes used to bring those cocktails to life as well as bulk mixes.
Depending on the menu, responsibilities may include preparing:
- Citrus wheels, wedges, twists, and peels.
- Fresh fruit garnishes.
- Herbs and other fresh ingredients.
- Dehydrated fruits and citrus.
- Cocktail picks and specialty garnishes.
- Rim preparations.
- Batch-prepared garnish components.
- Other seasonal or specialty beverage accompaniments.
Garnishes must be prepared according to established recipes and presentation standards.
Consistency matters.
If a signature cocktail is designed with a particular garnish, that garnish should look intentional every time the drink leaves the bar.
Barbacks will be trained on proper preparation, labeling, dating, storage, rotation, and sanitation procedures.
CLEANLINESS IS PART OF THE JOB
A great cocktail cannot come from a dirty bar.
Barbacks are responsible for helping maintain exceptional sanitation standards throughout the bar and beverage service areas.
This may include the use of approved commercial sanitizing and cleaning equipment and chemicals according to manufacturer instructions and company procedures.
Barbacks may be responsible for:
- Cleaning and sanitizing bar surfaces.
- Washing and properly handling glassware.
- Cleaning bar mats and service equipment.
- Maintaining sinks and sanitation stations.
- Cleaning spills immediately.
- Maintaining floors and service pathways.
- Properly handling trash, recycling, and broken glass.
- Cleaning and maintaining garnish preparation areas.
- Following proper chemical labeling, storage, and handling procedures.
You will receive training on the proper use of our sanitation equipment and cleaning products.
Clean as you go isn't a suggestion. It's how we operate.
FOOD AND DRINKS DON'T WAIT
Although your primary responsibility is supporting the bar, you're also part of the entire service team.
When food is ready and you're available:
Run it.
When a beverage needs to reach a guest:
Run it.
Our guests shouldn't wait because someone decided a task "wasn't their job."
Barbacks will be expected to learn table numbers, food-running procedures, beverage-running procedures, basic menu identification, and when to ask a Server, Bartender, or Manager for assistance.
Accuracy is just as important as speed.
Never guess where food or beverages belong.
ORGANIZATION MATTERS
The bar should be ready before the rush arrives.
Barbacks will help maintain organized:
- Liquor storage.
- Beer and wine storage.
- Coolers.
- Glassware.
- Garnish stations.
- Dry storage.
- Bar supplies.
- Cleaning and sanitation supplies.
Products must be stored correctly, rotated appropriately, and communicated when inventory begins running low.
The goal is simple:
Bartenders should be able to focus on Bartending and taking care of our guests.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
You may be a great Barback if you:
Work hard. This isn't a position where you'll spend much time standing still.
Move with urgency. You understand that five minutes during a bar rush can make a major difference.
Notice things. You're looking for what's getting low before it runs out.
Stay organized. You understand that everything behind a bar needs a place.
Take pride in cleanliness. A clean bar is part of great hospitality.
Are dependable. The entire bar team relies on you.
Can multitask. You may be stocking beer, running food, replenishing ice, and preparing garnishes within the same stretch of service.
Understand teamwork. There is no "that's not my job" mentality here.
Want to learn. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in learning more about craft cocktails, spirits, whiskey, beer, and professional Bartending.
