Description

Under general supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) adheres to established nursing care standards, assists in patient admission, transfer, and discharge; measures and records data relating to patient care; and reports all observed patient symptoms and reactions to appropriate personnel.

General Responsibilities

  • Responsible for preparing and serving patient meals while maintaining CMS and public health standards.
  • Takes temperature, pulse respiration and blood pressure, oxygen saturation.
  • Measures and record fluid and food intake/output.
  • Collects specimens; hot or cold soaks, changes non-sterile dressings, treats bed sores.
  • Assist in physical examinations, special treatment centers as necessary; assists transports in moving patients in and out of bed and wheelchair.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of various instruments and equipment such as bedpans, urinals, wheelchairs, sinks & suction machines.
  • Keep patient areas and rooms in clean and orderly condition; makes beds; replaces soiled linen; straightens bedside tables; and prepares the room for occupancy.
  • Replenish the supply cart daily.
  • Immediately notifies charge nurse of any abnormal vital signs or deviation from patient norm.
  • Assists patient with bath, feeding, toileting, and ADL, etc. and records on patients record.
  • Performs vital signs on patients as ordered and documents such in the patients record.
  • Maintains all patient care areas.
  • To demonstrate proper technique in finger stick for BS testing.
  • To demonstrate proper use of the Accu-Chek Advantage.
  • To demonstrate proper technique, use of equipment, and accuracy in obtaining:
  • temperature (oral, axillary, rectally and tympanic)
  • pulse (radial, apical)
  • respirations
  • blood pressure
  • To assist with connecting monitors to patients in the Inpatient Unit.
  • To assist with admissions, discharge, and transportation of patients according to SHOLA policy and procedure.
  • assisted ambulation.
  • assisted to and from stretcher.
  • assisted from stretcher to wheelchair.
  • discharging patient in wheelchair.
  • assisted from wheelchair to car.
  • maintains patient privacy and comfort.
  • To demonstrate proper technique in changing patients gown with an IV.
  • To clean, make and transport stretchers to areas of need.
  • To obtain stock from storeroom.
  • To know the location of emergency equipment:
  • crash cart
  • ventilator
  • ambu bags
  • airway box
  • portable and stationary oxygen
  • suction
  • electronic blood pressure machine
  • To assist nurses and doctors with dressing changes.
  • To summarize steps used to prevent injury in the care of combative patients.
  • To assist with maintaining patient safety.
  • Provide and assist with safe, therapeutic care considering the age, growth, development, and specific needs of the patient.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and quiet environment for patients, as well as other personnel.
  • Always provides for patient privacy and confidentiality, allows patient dignity to be maintained.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform in emergency situations for the safety and wellbeing of the patient, under direction of a registered nurse or physician.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of equipment used in the Inpatient area.
  • Assists in maintenance care and cleanliness of supplies - cost effectively maintains adequate supplies and equipment in appropriate working condition with proper documentation.
  • Reports damaged instruments to the Inpatient Manager and follows proper procedure for damaged instruments and/or equipment.
  • Completes appropriate competency checklists annually.
  • Always maintains a positive and professional attitude, works cooperatively and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Communicates change and implements change cooperatively.

Requirements

Education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Experience: At least two (2) years of experience in a hospital or medical environment.

Licenses/Certificates: Nursing Assistant certification by LDH, BLS (CPR) certification.

Special Skills: Knowledge of basic nursing techniques and procedures. Must be able to work 3/12's on a rotating schedule including weekends.
