Position Overview
The Academic Center Coach works primarily within the Academic Center to provide targeted academic, executive functioning, and social-emotional support for students. This role focuses on delivering individualized and small-group interventions that foster student independence, organization, self-advocacy, and engagement in learning.
The Academic Center Coach collaborates closely with the Academic Center Teacher and reports directly to the Director of Academic Services. The position also partners with faculty, student support personnel, and families to ensure students receive coordinated and responsive support.
Responsibilities
Academic Support
Provide individualized (1:1) and small-group academic coaching across subject areas including humanities, literature, science, and language
Support students with assignment completion, organization, study skills, and academic planning
Design and implement targeted academic interventions under the guidance of the Academic Center Teacher and Director of Academic Services
Help students develop executive functioning skills, including:
time management
prioritization
task initiation
planning
organization
self-monitoring
study strategies
Facilitate and/or assist with morning executive functioning group sessions
Monitor student understanding of assignments and provide scaffolding and instructional support as appropriate
Monitor student progress, grades, and engagement
Support implementation of accommodations and intervention plans outlined in IEPs and 504 Plans
Assist students in accessing accommodations and supports effectively
Facilitate student check-ins and help students navigate appropriate academic and student support resources
Foster student independence, self-advocacy, and confidence as learners
Collaboration and Communication
Collaborate closely with the Academic Center Teacher to plan, coordinate, and deliver student support services
Maintain regular and proactive communication with the Director of Academic Services and Academic Center Teacher regarding student progress, concerns, interventions, and support needs
Participate in student support meetings, including IEP and 504 meetings, as appropriate
Maintain consistent and professional communication with teachers, parents/caregivers, and members of the Academic and Student Support Team through email, documentation, and meetings
Document student progress and contribute to ongoing support planning
Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support
Support students in returning to learning and re-engaging in the classroom environment as quickly and successfully as possible
Reinforce positive behavioral expectations and promote productive learning behaviors
Support students with emotional regulation, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution strategies
Help students build resilience, coping strategies, and school engagement
Assist in restorative conversations when conflicts arise
Guide students toward additional supports within the school community when appropriate, including the Dean of Students, Academic Dean, School Counselor, Director of Academic Services, or Head of School
