What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Oracle DBA/OCI Tech Architect position at The Services Group?

Onsite 3 days a week

Job Purpose

The Senior Oracle DBA / OCI Technical Architect will assess, stabilize, operate and continuously improve the company's Oracle database, Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environments.

The role blends hands-on Oracle DBA/application DBA expertise with cloud architecture, security, operational readiness and vendor oversight. This person will serve as the technical SME for both the classic hosted Oracle EBS estate and the OCI environment supporting Oracle Fusion ERP and adjacent business-critical systems.

The role is expected to provide immediate remediation support while also establishing the long-term operating model, technical roadmap, documentation, controls and improvement backlog needed to run these environments securely and reliably.

Job Context & Major Challenges

  • Address an immediate technical resource gap in OCI and Oracle DBA expertise, including stabilization of security, backup, patching, lifecycle and operational processes.
  • Own technical assessment and remediation across two critical environments: the legacy hosted Oracle EBS/database environment and the OCI environment supporting Oracle Fusion ERP and related systems.
  • Act as the senior technical representative for Oracle/OCI topics across ERP, infrastructure, cybersecurity, integration, networking and business stakeholders.
  • Provide technical oversight of outsourced operations, currently including TCS for the legacy hosting environment and potentially a future managed service provider model for OCI.
  • Balance short-term remediation needs with long-term architecture, governance, cost, availability, disaster recovery and continuous improvement priorities.
  • Create and maintain practical documentation, RACI, runbooks, architecture diagrams and operational readiness artifacts that can be used by internal teams and service providers.

Ongoing Accountabilities

OCI Architecture & Operations

  • Serve as OCI architect and operational SME for tenancies, compartments, IAM, VCNs, routing, gateways/DRG, security lists/NSGs, load balancers, certificates, DNS, compute, storage, database services, observability and backup/recovery services.
  • Create conceptual, logical and physical architecture artifacts for OCI services and the Oracle Fusion ERP ecosystem, ensuring alignment with enterprise cloud governance, cybersecurity, networking and operational standards.
  • Evaluate OCI performance, reliability, security, cost, lifecycle and interoperability requirements; recommend and implement scalable, supportable patterns that reduce technical debt.
  • Drive OCI operational readiness, including monitoring, logging, audit evidence, runbooks, incident response, backup/recovery validation, patching and lifecycle processes.
  • Represent OCI architecture and operations in design reviews, change planning, incident/problem reviews and future sourcing/vendor decisions.

Oracle DBA / Oracle EBS Application DBA

  • Provide senior Oracle DBA and Oracle EBS application DBA expertise across production and non-production systems, including Oracle Database 19c/23ai, EBS R12.x, Exadata/ExaCS/DB Systems, RAC, Data Guard, RMAN, ASM, Grid Infrastructure, OEM and related middleware/integration technologies.
  • Lead or advise on Oracle database performance tuning, SQL tuning, capacity planning, database hygiene, patching, upgrades, cloning, refreshes, backup/recovery, DR testing and operational troubleshooting.
  • Support Oracle EBS technical administration such as ADOP patching, concurrent processing, cloning, environment refreshes, integrations, middle tier dependencies and release support.
  • Partner with ERP/application teams to diagnose production issues, validate database/application changes, and reduce downtime during planned maintenance and unplanned incidents.
  • Develop standards, operating procedures and automation opportunities for repeatable Oracle database and application administration activities.

Security, Availability, Backup & Disaster Recovery

  • Establish and maintain practical controls for security posture, privileged access, encryption/TDE, TLS/SSL, database and cloud auditability, patch compliance and vulnerability remediation.
  • Validate end-to-end backup coverage for Oracle databases, EBS components, OCI compute and storage; define monitoring, evidence, recovery steps and accountability for backup success/failure handling.
  • Define and periodically test disaster recovery and high availability processes, including Data Guard, RAC, OCI backups/clones, Object Storage replication and switchover/switchback runbooks where applicable.
  • Create resiliency recommendations to reduce production ERP and supporting system downtime during maintenance cycles and critical incidents.

Vendor Management, Governance & Operational Model

  • Act as the technical owner for vendor-facing Oracle/OCI topics, including day-to-day collaboration with TCS for legacy hosting and coordination with Oracle Support and future OCI managed service providers.
  • Review vendor change plans, implementation designs, monitoring approaches, patch plans, RCA documents, incident responses and permanent-fix proposals for technical accuracy and risk.
  • Hold vendors accountable to agreed operational practices, documentation standards, SLAs, support boundaries, backup/patching coverage and security requirements.
  • Maintain RACI, runbooks, support models, escalation paths, architectural artifacts and operational readiness documentation for internal teams and service providers.
  • Adhere to ITIL-aligned incident, problem, change and release management processes while keeping business-critical systems stable and secure.

Continuous Improvement & Engineering

  • Create and drive a continuous improvement backlog for security hardening, stability, cost optimization, performance, automation, observability, standardization and technical debt reduction.
  • Research, analyze and recommend technical approaches for difficult Oracle database, Oracle EBS, OCI, integration and operational problems.
  • Promote reusable, scalable and supportable solutions across cloud and on-premises environments; avoid one-off fixes where a standard pattern is needed.
  • Mentor internal technical teams and provide knowledge transfer so operational continuity does not depend on a single individual or vendor resource.

Required Qualifications

  • 10 years of hands-on Oracle DBA experience in production, business-critical environments, including performance tuning, backup/recovery, patching, upgrades, capacity planning and operational support.
  • 5 years of Oracle E-Business Suite application DBA experience, preferably with EBS R12.1/R12.2, ADOP patching, cloning, concurrent processing, integrations and large production databases.
  • 3 years of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure architecture and/or operations experience, including OCI IAM, networking, compute, storage, database services, load balancing, logging, monitoring, backup/recovery and security services.
  • Demonstrated experience with Oracle Database 19c and modern Oracle platforms; familiarity with Oracle Database 23ai, multitenant architecture, Exadata/ExaCS, DBCS and Autonomous Database is strongly valued.
  • Deep understanding of high availability and disaster recovery concepts, including Data Guard, RAC/Grid Infrastructure, RMAN, ASM, backup validation, RPO/RTO and DR testing.
  • Strong Linux/Unix administration fundamentals and working knowledge of storage, networking, firewall, DNS, certificate and virtualization concepts as they relate to Oracle and OCI platforms.
  • Experience coordinating with managed service providers, offshore support teams and enterprise vendors; ability to challenge technical plans, drive RCAs and ensure permanent remediation.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting, crisis management, prioritization and communication skills; able to work autonomously and coordinate multiple teams under pressure.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications & Certifications

  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect Professional or Associate certification; OCI Multicloud, OCI Developer, OCI Foundations or OCI Database Migration/Integration certifications are a plus.
  • Oracle Database Administration Professional / Oracle Certified Professional or equivalent hands-on Oracle DBA credentials.
  • Experience migrating Oracle databases, Oracle EBS, PeopleSoft or enterprise applications from on-premises hosting to OCI, ExaCS, DBCS, Autonomous Database or similar cloud platforms.
  • Experience with OCI Cloud Guard, Data Safe, Vault, Audit/Logging, Observability & Management, Autonomous Recovery Service, Object Storage replication, Events/Notifications and cost/capacity management.
  • Experience with GoldenGate, OEM 13c, ServiceNow, PagerDuty, SolarWinds DPA, Terraform/OCI Resource Manager, CI/CD tools or scripting/automation frameworks.
  • ITIL, TOGAF, project management or additional cloud certifications such as AWS or Azure are beneficial.
  • Manufacturing, ERP, financial systems, HR/payroll or other regulated, highly available business-critical application experience preferred.
