This is a full-time, non-represented role. The salary grade is 4023.

Job Summary


The internal Communications Specialist is a valuable member of the communications team and a vital part of the team’s efforts to strengthen organizational culture and increase staff and family engagement. The specialist supports the implementation of the internal communications strategy through strategic “Employee First” communication, proactive storytelling through various mediums, creative and professional writing and promoting a culture of communications excellence in every school and department. Assists District functional offices with the design and development of various forms of communication, execution of communications plans and documentation that supports the offices’ mission and culture while aligning with the District’s overarching mission and vision.


Essential Functions

  • Supports the development of creative storytelling via written publications, video/audio production, website and social media content.
  • Assists in providing technical assistance and strategic advice to School District departments in the development of communications plans, toolkits and major initiatives.
  • Researches, interviews, writes, edits, proofreads and distributes content for electronic and print communication, including the District’s internal e-newsletter.
  • Develops story logs and editorial calendars, conducts research and interviews, writes articles, and procures art or photos.
  • Maintains repository of internally produced District stories (electronic and print), accompanying photos and other media.
  • Ensures timely, accurate and consistent dissemination of material.
  • In collaboration with the creative services team, supports the content development, design and preparation of all District promotional and marketing material.
  • Promotes and provides logistical support at District sponsored media and public relations events.
  • Assists with the planning, coordination and implementation of recognition programs and special events to ensure the programs are executed according to the District’s internal communications guidelines.
  • Stays current on applicable web-based system upgrades; applies new and updated technology as necessary (i.e. WordPress, Mailchimp, Zoom, etc.).
  • Assists with the preparation of recipient bios and citations for awards ceremonies.
  • Assists the Director of Internal Communications with large-scale and complex assignments as requested.
Qualifications


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of full-time, paid, professional experience in communications, journalism, public affairs or a related field which has included the design and development of printed and on-line publications.
  • All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • English usage, spelling punctuation and grammar.
    • Photography best practices.
    • Video and audio production techniques and strategies including recording and editing
    • Public relations methods and techniques.
    • Desktop publishing and web development techniques.
    • Social media, including but not limited to, Facebook© and Twitter.
    • Layout, design and printing processes.
    • WordPress content management systems
    • The principles and practices of journalism.
    • The technical tools and software including Flash, Photoshop, Acrobat, Microsoft Office, non-linear editing software and other appropriate software applications.
    • Project management and cost analysis/monitoring.

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Design and develop brochures, newsletters, handbooks and other publications.
  • Use computer applications which include Microsoft Office.
  • Think creatively.
  • Manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Solve practical problems.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

  • Ensure that publications are appropriate for the subject audience.

  • Communicate effectively and excellently, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships across the District.
