Summary of the Job:
The Pet Kennel Supervisor plays a vital role in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness by ensuring their companion animals receive safe, compassionate, and high-quality care. This position oversees the daily operations of the shelter’s pet kennel facility, supervises volunteers, and fosters a trauma-informed, respectful environment for both pets and their owners.
Essential Functions:
Animal Care & Welfare:
- Oversee feeding, grooming, exercise, and medication administration for pets staying at the shelter
- Monitor animal health and behavior, and coordinate veterinary care when needed
- Ensure all animals are treated with empathy and respect, recognizing their importance to their owners
Facility Operations:
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kennels, play areas, and common spaces in accordance with health and safety standards
- Manage inventory of pet supplies and coordinate donations or purchases
- Ensure the facility is secure, organized, and welcoming
Volunteer Supervision:
- Train & supervise kennel volunteers in trauma-informed care practices and animal handling
- Create and manage volunteer schedules to ensure adequate coverage
- Provide ongoing support, coaching, and performance feedback
Resident Engagement & Support:
- Communicate compassionately with residents about their pets’ care and well-being
- Collaborate with case managers and shelter staff to support residents’ needs related to their pets
- Collaborate with community partners regarding donated services and/or items
- Help facilitate reunification of pets with owners during transition or emergencies
Record Keeping & Compliance
- Maintain accurate records of pet intake, care routines, medical treatments, and incidents
- Ensure compliance with local animal welfare regulations and shelter policies
Required Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; coursework or certification in animal care, social services, or related fields preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in animal care or kennel operations; experience in a shelter or social service setting is a plus
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Comfortable handling animals of various sizes and temperaments
- Commitment to the dignity and rights of individuals experiencing homelessness
Work Environment:
- Physically active role requiring lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, animal waste, and various animal behaviors
