What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer and Special Events Coordinator (3150) position at THE SALVATION ARMY?
Schedule/Hours: M – F 8:00 pm – 5 pm - 40 hours a week
This position is responsible for:
Manages volunteer and staff bell-ringing activities for Red Kettles, as well as community outreach activities with Collier County schools and other organizations. Identifies and maintains a list of volunteer opportunities within Collier County. Recruits, trains, coordinates, and monitors the work of volunteers ensuring ample staff to meet program needs; prepares records and reports regarding the same.
Under the direction of the Director of Development oversees, plans, and coordinates special events. Provides administrative detail and on-line record-keeping of all special events and volunteer activities for the Development Department.
This position requires a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends. Requires an outgoing, detail-oriented, event-planning professional who can form/build vendor, community and donor relationships with an awareness of the Development Department’s overall fundraising goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinates resources and volunteer personnel to implement year-round fund-raising efforts. Participates in screening and selection of volunteer staff ensuring adequate staff is maintained to meet program needs. Plans, schedules, and assigns volunteer staff to program coordinators; instructs volunteers in proper methods and procedures; maintains volunteer database and volunteer application files. Evaluates volunteer performance through interviews with program coordinators and volunteers.
- Plans, develops, coordinates, and monitors all details associated with the production of fund-raising special events and campaigns including but not limited to the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, Rally for Good, Christmas Toy Shop, Red Kettle Program, William Booth, National Salvation Army Week and Donut Day. Identifies the necessary resources, equipment, and personnel; plans event procedures; recruits, motivates, inspires and instructs volunteers and staff.
- Represents The Salvation Army at public information fairs; assembles and prepares materials. To build, enhance and sustain donors, coordinates participation in and promotion of, existing community marketing events; seeks to expand and develop additional community awareness and fundraising opportunities.
- In coordination with the Director of Development prepares correspondence including, thank you letters; updates and maintains current contact lists; makes phone calls to network and otherwise develop relationships benefiting The Salvation Army.
- Assists the PR & Social Media Coordinator (Director of Development) in compiling and publishing the Annual Report and other locally printed materials. Maintains and updates website and social media accounts.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Work may be performed in an office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like but not limited to the office environment due to travel requirements

- Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or a related Business field, and
- four (4) years progressively responsible experience in public relations developing and coordinating special events and volunteer relations or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid State Driver's License.
