What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Lifeguard (6131) position at THE SALVATION ARMY?
Schedule/Hours: Full-time – 37.5 hours per week
This position is responsible for:
Serves as lead worker to Lifeguards and Slide Attendants in the absence of the supervisor; assists in training new staff on applicable policies and procedures; handles water emergencies and escalated customer service-related issues. Serves as a lifeguard for all pool operations; provides constant surveillance of pool activities. Teaches water exercise and swimming lesson classes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leads members and aquatics personnel during emergency situations; notifies the Aquatics Coordinator of unique operational or personnel problems.
- Assists in training employees in the proper policies and procedures related to pool activities.
- Guards the safety of swimmers by providing constant surveillance of the entire pool area.
- Directs and supervises the behavior of all swimmers to ensure compliance with pool safety rules.
- Provides emergency lifesaving assistance to troubled or drowning swimmers; performs lifesaving C.P.R. and first aid in accordance with certified practices and procedures; contacts emergency medical assistance when needed; stays with victims until emergency medical assistance takes over care of victim.
- Teaches various swimming lesson classes; maintains attendance records for classes; mails certification cards for swimming lesson classes; serves as a leader and swimming expert to other instructors
- Maintains the cleanliness of the pool water; vacuums bottom of pool surface; scrubs side walls; back washes filter system; checks filter gauges and regulates water level and temperature of pool.
- Tests the pool water Ph level, chlorine level and Bromine level as scheduled in order to ensure correct chemical balance of pool water; dispenses chemicals into the pool as needed; ensures the safety of all swimmers.
- Maintains neatness and cleanliness of pool area; collects and disposes of trash; maintain neat and orderly pool office.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to meet attendance requirements.
- Ability to read, write and communicate the English language.
- Ability to swim and perform lifesaving activities.
- Work is performed in a normal fitness center environment where there are physical discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

- High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND
- two years’ experience working as a lifeguard and teaching swimming lessons, with some experience in a supervisory role OR
- any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Licenses and Certifications:
- Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructor
- Red Cross Certified Lifeguard
- C.P.R. and First Aid Certification (upon hire)
- Instructor Certification
